It was a trip to me in HS when I was learning the periodic table. I thought all metals had to look 'metallic', hard and shiny. Quickly found out that's not the case. ^_^

I'd probably just classify it as a mineral, though that's complicated depending on what exactly you're talking about when you say calcium, and what you mean by the word mineral.

Calcium falls into one of those weird categories, where the scientific classification doesn't really jibe with the (original) layman's word. Like how scientists will call things like tomatoes, corn, and pumpkins fruits (because of their biological structure), while most people will tell those scientists to fuck right off (because their use in cooking generally classifies them as vegetables).

Calcium's a metal based on the scientific definition that's only existed for about 250 years, but it's not really a metal at all based on what everyone else on Earth have considered to be metals for the last 10,000 years. So it kind of feels like scientists should have come up with new terminology rather than misusing the terminology that already existed, and they have only themselves to blame for any ensuing confusion.

It's a third grade level 'trick' question. What is the most common metal in the human body. Most will say iron, but its really calcium.

My students are usually surprised by this, too. It's because we're used to thinking of calcium as being the white chalk that builds up on faucets. That's actually a compound, calcium hydroxide. Metals that form into compounds often lose their "metallic" characteristics.

It's like how both hydrogen and oxygen are very flammable gases, but when together as a compound, they form water.

Science is wack, yo.

Calcium is very metal. \m/

Just chuck some pure calcium into a tub of water and you'll see how metal calcium is.

I always prefer pointing out that you can take a highly explosive metal that detonates on contact with water and a highly toxic lethal green gas that was one of the first chemical weapons used in WWI, smash them together, and then we use it as one of our most popular food seasonings.
