President Trump said Monday that hes looking at unilaterally taking steps to stop tenant evictions and lower payroll taxes, adding that such moves might be necessary if a new coronavirus relief bill cant be brokered with congressional Democrats.

A lot of people are going to be evicted, but Im going to stop it because Ill do it myself if I have to, Trump told reporters at an event at the White House. I have a lot of powers with respect to executive orders, and were looking at that very seriously right now.

He later said he could act to prevent people from having to go to homeless shelters, where he said they could be at higher risk of catching the coronavirus.

They are thrown out viciously, Trump said. Its not their fault.

Trump is pretty liberal with executive orders. Him signing this one wouldnt surprise me only because the election is coming up.

Also, isn't lower payroll taxes actually really bad? I don't recall the specifics, but I'm pretty sure none of the Republicans or Democrats want it done.

Im sure his executive order will make it so that it sounds like it can actually do something.

But it is written to do absolutely nothing.

Which is impossible because it's specifically defined in the Constitution that States run their elections.

Also, on that note, is this even possible?

So like, wouldnt this be communism? Obviously not as a whole but the federal government telling private owners they cant do what they want with their own property?

Its def directly opposed to capitalism and would be the biggest presidential act of regulation in history if Im not mistaken. So like, are his supporters gonna froth at the mouth and talk shit about trump?

this is worse than closing a business, this is demanding a business operate at an absolute loss.

so like whats the thoughts? Also anyone know what the term for it would be? Its authoritarian for sure but what would it fall under as a term for a way a government would normally operate?

I assure you, if President Donald J. Trump outlaws evictions and cancels rent until the pandemic is under control, you won't see a lot of pushback on the left on that point. He'll still be a POS that got us in this situation to begin with, but attention would focus on other things. You didn't see anyone attacking him for signing the law for the unemployment benefits or stimulus, it wouldn't be any different here.

Conservatives have no core principles. They assume that just because they would hate something good that the opposition did that the left and liberals would do the same.

If a tenant is late on payment, in the vast majority of jurisdictions a landlord can evict them in 30 to 60 days if they give notice.

That's just kinda how it is. I suspect at this point, the vast majority of evictions would fit all those criteria easily.

I think at this point a rental bailout might be necessary. Whatever stimulus package congress is going to pass isn't going to cover 3-6 months of rent due to loss of jobs and lack of hiring, and it would take months for them to pay that money back if at all.

I don't want anyone to be evicted during Covid but you can't just fuck over all landlords

If you're going to ban evictions in an executive order you need to give protections to landlords or have government funding for people who can't pay in the meantime or something.

Everyone seems to assume every Landlord is Scrouge, a miserable old multi-millionaire who gets off on throwing cripples and orphans out of their overprived hovels and into the snow to die.

A lot of them are just dudes, many struggling or in debt. If no one is paying renting you are ruining their lives and careers.
