Leaders in education, politics and other areas gathered in suburban Evanston Sunday to ask that the Illinois State Board of Education change the history curriculum at schools statewide, and temporarily halt instruction until an alternative is decided upon.

At a news conference, State Rep. LaShawn K. Ford said current history teachings lead to a racist society and overlook the contributions of women and minorities.

Before the event Sunday, Rep. Ford's office distributed a news release "Rep. Ford Today in Evanston to Call for the Abolishment of History Classes in Illinois Schools," in which Ford asked the ISBOE and school districts to immediately remove history curriculum and books that "unfairly communicate" history "until a suitable alternative is developed."

The representative instead suggested that schools devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand democratic processes.

"It costs us as a society in the long run forever when we dont understand our brothers and sisters that we live, work and play with, Ford said.

The state representative is sponsoring a bill that would require elementary schools to teach students about the civil rights movement.

They're history didnt start as soon as they came into contact with the white man. You know that right? And womans predicament was the same regardless of time, race, religion, culture, country, state, kingdom, tribe, town or even continent. So I have no idea why you're singling out whites in this regard.

That's because throughout the majority of American history, minorities were enslaved, railroaded, redlined and exploited. So the push is for minorities to get the recognition and credit for their innovations and accomplishments that were underreported or outright stolen by the "trailblazers".

Since you seem to think "minority's [sic] didn't do more", this would be especially helpful for you.
Sorry, but theres no going back to change this. Only forward.
Exactly. Giving future generations a more informed education is definitely forward-moving.

Yes. There are some that believe Black history is by-and-large irrelevant.

Exactly. I saw a picture in one that had a slave family nicely dressed and "negotiating for work". These so-called history books are already in schools and being taught to children. How do people learn from history by covering it up?
This is an evil and unacceptable practice. If history classes have to be temporarily cancelled in order to course-correct, I'm all for it.

I'm not a damn historian, if theres more to their history that's on THEM, not ME to uncover and then add to our schools curriculums. Something they failed to do during my generation and current day it seems so dont atk me for this.

And if there generally isnt enough Amercian history then theres always African history from then till now.

We're talking about American history; you yourself said as such. American history is all about White men doing things while preventing--sometimes violently--minorities and women from being able to achieve the same things.

What relevance does teaching African history as you suggested later on have with Black Americans wanting to learn about the contributions of Black people to American history?

Prismsblade posted...

Because White women were still discriminated against and were barred from pursuing the same opportunities that their male counterparts could.

Minority women already had the stigma of being minorities working against them. But White women, despite being of the "superior race", still were not able to pursue and achieve the same goals that their male counterparts could.

The thing about american history is it only goes back about 250 years. Vs others who existed for thousands of years. So its ridiculous to complain about our history or lack there of in regards to certain demographics when even the majority doeasnt have much to tell. This is why I proposed learning of history elsewhere like Africa.

Barred but that didnt stop them, there were still female warriors, generals, rulers, intellects, politicians, pirates, inventors and so on throughout history. But most of them weren't American so I suppose they dont count in your book.

"until a suitable alternative is developed."

Orwell tried to warn us about this.
Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.
