I tried twice to get into the Paper Mario games; Sticker Star (sucked) and the original (twas ok, but I got bored and never finished it). Needles to say they didnt do it for me.

Meanwhile GoT has been amazing. After that I might try Neon Abyss. Anyone play that yet?

Generally speaking, the first two (64 and Thousand Year Door) are the only ones people are thinking of when they say Paper Mario is a good series. Super Paper Mario is also good in its own right, but it's very different and not quite on the same level. Sticker Star and onward took the series in a new direction that most fans generally haven't liked very much (though at this point, TTYD was 16 years and four games ago, so perhaps it's more reasonable to consider the first two to be outliers now).

That said, if you didn't really enjoy the original, you don't really need to try TTYD as well to claim you've given the series a good try. It polishes and improves on the original in a number of ways, but the core gameplay and writing style are basically the same, so not liking 64 can reasonably predict not liking TTYD.

I haven't played GoT, and probably never will, but I agree.

I've been playing Origami King. I'll be honest, it's boring as hell. The battle system is very uninspired and feels pointless. Everyone kept saying the writing is really good and witty. I find it more annoying than anything. I've done 2 chapters and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better.

I don't like it.

Ghost of Tsushima is really fun. I don't care if a game is innovative or not, it's a refinement of ideas in other games and it's just a solid experience overall. The Origami King is a good game and most people agree that the visuals, music, locations, characters, etc. are good but the battle system is pretty divisive and imo it's still worse than the combat in the first two games.

I like the battle system. It's different, sure. But the boss battles are pretty fun. Tbh, I'm glad they changed the battle system. The battle system in the first two is fun, but gets repetitive after a while. I think the only way I'd have fun with it now is if they allow you to bring more than one partner into battle. Either way, I like the The Origami King...

On one hand, I can understand wanting to do something different with Paper Mario given that the Mario & Luigi series fills a pretty similar niche. It is kind of baffling how poorly they've done that, though.

Mario & Luigi is likely a dead series and this point so thats moot.

Im hoping not. I really enjoyed the series and it would be perfect for the switch.

I havent played GoT yet but Ive really been enjoying Origami King. I feel like it is similar to TTYD except for the battle system. The battle system is quite easy for the first few chapters but they do become a decent challenge later on. I would recommend Origami King to someone who liked the first two.

It has been a while since the last new M&L entry. Color Splash was more recent than Paper Jam, though there have been M&L remakes since then. I wonder when they'll come out with a new one.

Eh, Mario x Rabbids wasn't that bad. I still haven't finished it, having drifted away near the end because I came up against something slightly difficult and lacked the motivation to work around it, but that was more because it's a relatively shallow game and my interest had already been waning. The Rabbids were generally okay in it, and didn't change much about my overall impression.

I've seen the point made that Rabbids are broadly annoying for the same reason Minions are, in that they're just hordes of identity-less creatures doing stupid stuff. They're more tolerable in Mario x Rabbids, though, because they're given more unique identities that give actual personalities to the stupidity. I'm inclined to agree with that. They're still stupid, but it's more structured instead of being random, incoherent nonsense, which is generally more enjoyable.

A Pikmin RPG could be interesting.
