It's the goofy humor and ad-libbing that were the main problems. Ghostbusters' humor was dry and sarcastic for the most part. The newer one had just plain goofy in your face humor. I feel the internet would have had a similar reaction if say it were guys like Jack Black, Seth Rogan, James Franco, etc. in it.
