I'd call out before I'd ever work that day, although luckily I've never had to call out on my birthday. Ironically though I've out of tradition called out the following Monday or prior Friday depending where my day falls to also give myself a 3 day weekend. Then one time I missed the two week advance notice we needed to give and I couldnt get request off, so I just worked anyway. Nothing was different, not even a happy birthday from a single manager.
