When I was in the Scouts, I learned how to shoot, how to tie knots, how to camp in the woods, how to rescue people from drowning, how to perform CPR, woodcarving, leatherworking, basketweaving, canoeing, I learned about civic duty, how the government works, what legislature does... guess we can tack this crap on there too why not.

That's really good imo. Kids are so impressionable, and something like that can stick with them for the rest of their lives.

came here to say this, keep seeing class action lawsuits essentially claiming they're dissolving to avoid paying out for child molestation charges.

As a parent i've wrestled with this as my daughter is getting older. We moved recently, but before we moved, our next door neighbors were black. My daughter loved playing with their daughter, and they get along great. Shes a really good kid--respectful, doesnt get into trouble, and being 1 year older than mine, helps to keep her out of trouble sometimes even.

My daughter obviously doesnt see color--doesnt think anything differently about her friend...and why would she? So what is the right way to approach this? Do i explain to her what racism is, who its against, that its wrong, and mean, etc.? I feel like that could lead to a situation where they get into an argument, and she says something mean about her skin color, thinking its a good way to hurt her feelings, not understanding the implications--kids are like that.

Or do i wait until shes older? Shes 7 now...and im positive has not had any interaction or anything of the sort that would make her think of her friend, or black people in general, differently.

Are we shooting ourselves in the foot by presenting these things, when there is no reason to? As a parent, this is a really difficult thing to figure out how to handle...

Anyone with kids thought about this?

So obviously you didn't learn civic duty.

I don't have kids but I say don't do this. What you don't want her to end up doing is feeling any guilt or shame for who she is or point fingers at X for everything that's wrong in society without having the necessary background information understand why the dynamics came into play. I say this as a black man in a "3rd world country" witnessing younger white guys on this site lament that they shouldn't feel happiness because of who they are. I know this isn't your intention but the way people talk about racism, they pull down the new generation and it manifests as a lot of kids resenting society. No society can thrive on the backs of demoralized men.

For right now, just lead by example. Let your own actions explain to her how she should treat people.

When I was a teenager I went to numerous Boy Scout camps. The scout leaders were ragingly homophobic and passed it down to all of the kids. It was awful and I am gay. But I was too afraid to speak up about it even though it made me angry.. I remember one scout leader who was teaching a course on wildlife who started mocking a kid in front of the class for having a rainbow umbrella.

BSA needs this. I think this was back when being openly gay meant you couldn't be an eagle scout (which I think they stopped enforcing a couple of years ago??) It might not fix their stupid toxic masculinity or racism, but they need it anyway because it will help at least a few kids.

As an Eagle Scout, this is a good idea. I was in pretty open and diverse troop, but I know a lot aren't and can get pretty insular.

As someone who really enjoyed my time in Boy Scouts, I am so sorry to hear this. Shitty leaders make for shitty kids and it can ruin what could have been a really rewarding experience.

From the link:

Similar to other existing badges like American Cultures and Citizenship in the Community, the new badge will require Scouts to learn about and engage with other groups and cultures to increase understanding and spur positive action, the Boy Scouts said.

Right, thanks for the reinforcement. I didnt think i should be explaining that to her. I think there may eventually be a time where it comes up, and it will need to be addressed...but i really dont want to discuss it with her because i dont want to take her innocence away. I dont want her to look at black people--or anyone else for that matter--differently because i put the idea in her head. That may be part of the problem of systemic racism. If we didnt actually know about it existing, would it be possible to completely eradicate naturally? Or were we to wipe the slate clean, and everyone forgot about race, and past atrocities--would they eventually surface on their own, because of our human nature? I feel like we as a society are advanced enough that if we were able to reset that part of our history, and memory, that we could actually live without it completely.

A very slippery slope. Anyways, thanks again for the input. Clearly nobody else has kids, or wanted to even touch the subject, but im glad you did.
