Whoa, chapter 12 is hitting very, very hard.

But the context of Chapter 11 changing the graveyard from the original (more a sign of Midgar's expansion creating death and decay in the underclass, as the wreckage of a long ago train crash is left to rot as unimportant) is pretty striking. Remember the somber music that played in OGFFVII? Anxious Heart is such a great piece of music to really set the feelings for it in the original.

In the sequel, the decision to focus on the spiritual element just completely flips the idea on it's head. It's no longer a monument to inequality and progress. It's a literal connection between the spiritual and physical.

Wait, when does it say this? I thought it just said it's just a junkyard for unused trains.

Going off memory but I thought it was both, hence why certain trains are still on their tracks.

I don't think a crash is ever mentioned, but I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure it's just that they left trains there when not in use and then it kept stacking up because they just never used them again, and the overcrowding/disrepair is what caused all the shifting off of tracks and such.

I mean either way, my point stands. The whole purpose of it originally was to show Shinra causing abandonment and decay in the name of progress.

That is so not the tone of FFVIIR.

The train ghosts were by far my least favorite part in this game. It felt really out of place, especially since we were supposed to be RACING to get to Sector 7 at that time.

I can't get this game out of my head man, it was so good

And honestly they kinda nailed the changes because I am so into thinking about what is going to happen next. The Force Awakens comparison is apt. The only videogame currently doing this to me is God of War 2018, because I am anticipating Kratos vs. Thor so fucking much, and maybe Horizon too, but neither are quite on this level of excitement.

Finally got the platinum trophy for this. I definitely felt the itch too, after being the game the first time I almost felt an immediate itch to go and replay it on hard.

Hard mode was fun. The entire game wasn't too difficult but hard gave it a bit of a challenge, which was nice. I think the hardest boss for me was somehow Hell House. I think I died to it the most in both my normal and hard playthroughs.

That's fairly normal, Hell House is kind of... fiddly.

It has so many stages and parts of the battle where it's immune, you really have to pay attention to fight it efficiently.

I just finished it and I'm shocked how much better this turned out than I expected. I'm probably going to jump right back into hard mode for a second playthrough which I'm not sure I've ever done with an RPG.

One of my favorite moments, and it is so stupid and minor, is when Aeris gives Cloud the flower at the beginning. When she says "lovers used to give these to each other when they're reunited", I thought it was such a cool, meta moment. I had no idea at the time that there were going to be any sort of timeline shenanigans going on. I'm really torn if I want Aeris to die or not. She sort of needs to, but I loved her character this time around which I definitely did not in the original game.

Jessie, Wedge, and Biggs were also shockingly good characters that I could've cared less about in the original. I loved this whole cast, outside of maybe Red XIII who you just don't really have enough time with. Every character in this game is so much better than the original it is crazy. And the battle system is bonkers fun too.

Right now I feel like this is one of my favorite games all time. But I'll let it sit for a bit and see how I feel in like a week.

I have to echo the praise here. This game was the first one in forever that I finished and thought "I immediately want to play this again." Not even Nier Automata, Persona 5, or BoTW made me feel like that. This game is obviously NOT better than those games, but the fun factor here is pretty high.

The theme of "reunion" is really implemented well here. It works on the level of the original game's sense of "reunion" (i.e. the Sephiroth stuff) as well as the endgame idea that these characters are reuniting from the prior game, and the meta idea that the fanbase is reuniting with the characters too.

I did finally watch the Tim Rogers video and I agree that "trinkets" can be eliminated and the materia system needs work. But this game has created such a great template for the sequels that SE has to actually try to mess this up - which they probably will, but at least we'll always have this installment!

Also reading through stuff I am an idiot. Didn't realize "magnify" was actually "all". I read the description and was like "my magic always hits fine, why would I use this" and then never did. It was fine on normal because I just had heal on two people and never had too much problem with any fight after I got a good hang of the mechanics.

Still, good thing to know for my hard playthrough though!

This. Plus the dance itself was a fun sequence.

I think Chapter 9 is also great but the collapsed highway section is definitely one of the low points of the game. The high fives are absolutely wonderful though.

I'm trying to decide what the low point was for me. There are a ton of segments I loved but not really any I hated. Maybe the aside in the train graveyard? Knowing what I knew, I was like "no we don't have time to play with ghosts you guys gotta run". Even that though there were some parts I liked. I think it just felt off with the urgency of the situation, overall.

There are multiple times I laughed (and I did like the "Cloud, permission to kill" line) but I think I laughed the hardest at:

"Who ARE you people?"
Barret: "AVALANCHE"
Aeris: "Local florist!"

I thought the hand crane tunnel was pretty good, loved the music, loved the thugs, loved the aerith interactions obviously, the crane puzzles were not great of course, but not offensively bad, and they were a nice callback.

Low point for me was hojo's lab, just such a long, repetitive dungeon, and I just wanted it over with to get to the end game stuff I was anticipating to be sooner.

I am still really pissed about that. Logically there's no reason (a) that should exist on that floor in the Shinra building, and (b) be that massive yet still only take up the 68th floor.

If they stick The Drum in the basement, which works even better since they established the basement exists for the Turks and Scarlet scene, plus to properly capture the sheer size/score of The Drum, AND if we want to go even further, the Deepground connection. Hojo's special elevator takes them down there, then they take the elevator up to the 69th floor, all good. Instead we get that which makes no sense and was just... so painful.

That, and re-entering Sector 7 after the plate falls, are the two big logical leaps I just can't make. Just a few chunks of metal here and there really don't capture the effect the full plate falling should have had, truly smooshing everything... the original game did a far better job showing that.

It certainly wasn't great, but it was interesting seeing how a AAA video game would handle something like a final Cold Steel dungeon. Wasn't bad all things considered.

Speaking of Cold Steel, it'll be interesting going forward to see if future installments of Remake have any sort of save bonus. Like they probably won't let you transfer over a fully maxed out character roster from one game to another, but they might let you start out at Level 30 instead of 20 or something.

One thing they absolutely CAN'T do is make up some lame in-universe reason for "depowering" everyone between each game, i.e. they can't continue to pull more from Kingdom Hearts. This game did kind of speed through a lot of weapons and armor though, so it'll be interesting to see what new stuff they invent for future titles.
