Jeff & Jackie are maybe less argumentative, but still pretty interesting despite that.

So I'm thinking about our two two-time winners and it's pretty amazing that it's two people that you would not expect to be able to pull off such a feat. You'd think it might be people like Kim and Jeremy who are just solid all-around players, but instead it's Sandra, who is bad at challenges and has a mouth, and Tony, whose aggressive, erratic gameplay makes him a huge target and a strategic liability.

Going through/deleting super old Facebook posts, and apparently when Fiji was airing I really REALLY hated Lisi. But I actually enjoyed her on rewatches. Just one of many RTV opinions of mine that has changed over the years. I've had so many TAR opinions change on my current string of rewatches. There's one team that was once my least-favorite team of their season and are now in my all-time top 5.

tbqh i have no idea what sequester actually is but early 2000s me who spent way too much time playing and following goofy fan-games on the gfaqs survivor board is charmed by the idea of 20 actual survivors playing a fan-game online

each round (or every other round?) someone gets an idol by voting first
each round has a twist announced at the beginning of the round, which I know some of us will hate (ex. getting 8+ votes you're immune instead, can't vote for someone you've already voted for, person voted out can drag someone out with them, etc), so you strategize around that
there are 5 video rooms with room limits, players can go in and out of rooms and strategize

us as the viewing audience has a page with all 5 rooms and you unmute/mute whichever rooms you're interested in

So what seasons would you guys say have the best newbie casts? I was thinking of that earlier today, and I think the tippy-top tier is China, Exile Island, and David vs. Goliath. All three of those have a really high ratio of amazing characters and few if any duds.

Next tier down would be Cagayan and Kaoh-Rong, and the next one below that would be Pearl Islands and Philippines (even though Pearl Islands is my favorite season, I'm fully prepared to admit that it rides heavily on the shoulders of five or six people and there are plenty of duds).

you are basically right about pearl islands, though the fact that one tribe (of 8) has 3 of the show's biggest all-time characters is still worth a whole heck of a lot

Aside from the obvious Sandra/Fairplay/Rupert power trio, I'd say Lill, Burton, and to a lesser degree Christa and Savage help to carry it as well, but anyone else could probably be removed from the season and you'd lose very little (and Osten being removed would be a straight-up improvement).

Exile Island is a no-go. The La Mina tribe is made up of Terry and the most painfully boring players of the entire season. The only reason Exile Island was successful is because Casaya's insanity held together long enough to whittle La Mina down to just Terry. Same goes for Cagayan. The Beauty tribe is mostly useless filler in this season.

My choices for best newbie casts:

Vanuatu
Nicaragua
San Juan Del Sur
Kaoh Rong

i feel like half of vanuatu's cast sucks, nicaragua is terrible, and kaoh rong is dragged down by scot and jason too much tbqh

sjds is a pretty good answer but the blue tribe has most of the stars there

Exile Island has Cirie, Shane, and Courtney, who are all-time top-tier, Bruce, Terry, and Bob-Dawg, who aren't far behind, and Tina, Danielle, Aras, Sally, and Misty, who are all pretty good as well. Of the remaining five (none of whom were outright bad), four of them were gone pre-jury.

Nicaragua has a handful of stars (Fabio, Holly, Brenda, Marty, Naonka, Dan, and both Jimmys) but is weighed down tremendously by Chase/Jane/Sash/a lot of nobodies.

Vanuatu isn't a bad choice. Probably belongs with Pearls and Philippines on my tiers. Same with SJDS.

For a long time (well until Colton came along three seasons later) NaOnka was my most-hated castaway of all time, but I've come to appreciate her in rewatches, with the acknowledgement that she was awful in her quit episode and the episode where she knocked over a cripple for an immunity idol.

I also appreciate that the editors didn't try to hide or downplay her awfulness like they do with some people.

There is only ONE real dud in Vanuatu, and he's the first boot. Everyone else at least brings something to the season, and the Yasur Tribe is one of the best non-Casaya tribes of all time in terms of diversity of personality.

Just read an article in which Adam claimed that he, Wendell and Yul were intentionally excluded by everyone else on Edge.

Apparently Parvati bought two jars of peanut butter. One was shared by herself, Ethan and Danni, and the other by Natalie, Tyson, Rob and Amber. And the three guys I mentioned were left out, but other future Edge residents like Sophie and Kim were welcomed and got to have some.

just watched russell hantz interview wendall holland on his podcast discussing the recent minnesota murder of a black man at the hands of police. russell was clearly out of his depth but i gained respect for both of them in that interview tbh

russell is mostly ignorant about the issue but it was truly impressive to me he gave a platform for discussion about a pressing issue and wendell handled it great and explained his perspective very succinctly to russell. never really seen anything from wendell outside of the game so that humanized him for me and he was very patient with russell and the conversation was definitely overall productive imo

he talked survivor waw as well and explained how awful natalie played the edge social game despite having a huge advantage of the players in the actual game

on-topic, i listened to sophie and michele's interviews with rob the past few days, and i thought they helped fill in a decent amount of the gaps in the season's edit (though i'd still like to hear from denise!)

more than anything, i was happy to hear they both seemed to have an experience that helped turn things around from the crap they got after their initial wins and being seen as "lower-tier winners", whatever that means

So you all know that I love making "what if" scenarios for Survivor. One I've never done was S34 as intended. For those who don't know, Game Changers was originally going to have a concrete casting theme, but it was shelved for a generic All-Star season because they couldn't get enough people that they needed for the theme. Based on the fact that many more winners than ended up on the season went through the casting process, many suspect it would have been winners vs. second chancers (a name that I've seen tossed around a lot is "Champions vs. Challengers"). What's interesting is that if you take the 17 non-winners from Game Changers and remove everyone who wasn't playing for the second time, as well as Sierra Thomas who was a last-second replacement (for a winner, so that doesn't screw up this theory), you get, what do you know, five men and five women. So with all that in mind, this is the best I was able to come up with for what the cast would have looked like had they been able to go ahead with the theme, and based on what we know about who went through casting, this is probably pretty close to 100% accurate.

Random thought, did we ever find out why Samoa didn't have a loved ones visit? The only other season that didn't have a loved ones reward of some kind (other than the BvW seasons) was Fiji, and we know that that was because of political unrest happening there near the end of filming, but I never heard anything on Samoa.

Non-controversial meaning nobody that stirred up headlines by being explicitly racist/homophobic or sexually harassing other houseguests. Obviously a lot of these people are controversial in the sense that they cause drama in the house but nothing that crosses those lines.
