Rude Buster
Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

Im currently addicted to Necrodancer. Havent come back to Six Feet Thunder much, it has a very different feel in-game, especially when youre dying as Aria lot. Its still pretty good either way.

Oh rad, Virt composed for Switch Force. I love you too Virt,

That will change. (In both directions, probably, but certainly for the ToC.)

Brain Power
Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

And so it starts!

Match 1:

Rude Buster just reminds me that I have to check out Deltarune. Toby Fox, you one-man-band genius, you never cease to not disappoint. Very solid track, yet far from the best of the good guy Toby. Its competitor, however, is very similar in style and overall quality; also, fun video, huh. It's really fun, reminiscent of the style of the 80's in terms of singing, with a mix of 90's drum-beat speed and 2000's/2010's techno.

This match is basically "Rude Buster vs. Blockbuster", you gotta admi--

"Hey Why did you finish all of a sudden?

LOL

I agree.

Match 2:

First song's image reminds me a lot of Atelier (I though it was one of those games, actually). The song itself has an okay beat and melody, but it has nice little details in the background that make it stand out a little more - enough to not make it fall into a "mediocre" territory (not so much because of it being mediocre, since it is unusual and stylish, but rather because I don't like its quality much).

*listens to second song*

Ah... VGMusic of the Day memories I didn't remember this song to be non-vocal - and it definitely could use some if it wanted; it's one of those rare cases (very rare) that I think some vocals would help it. Maybe. Well, the melody's fine, but it certainly feels like it lacks something...

Close match. You know what could've settled this down in a more fair and direct manner? Having both songs with and without vocals.

Match 3:

"Okay, so moving on to the third match... What do we have here?" *sees title* "W-wait Are you serious? We're barely reaching Day 2 and we're already bringing on the heavy hitters? That doesn't seem too fair for the rest of the competition, since I think it's kind of strange that this song isn't retired already But on the other hand, HECK YEAH! Bring on the HEAVY HITTERS! (Lovin' me some VGMC spice-up!)

So... at the time of this writing, I'm going to see if the competitor stands a chance.

'Six Feet Thunder', huh? That's a really small thunder, if you ask me. Electrifying? Yes. Intense? Kinda Quality composition? Yes. Up to today's challenge against freaking Invitation Flower? No, sadly.

Rankings:

Blo0o0o0ckbuster > Flowey's Invitation > Nut Buster > One Point Eight Meters Long Ray >> Kaleidoscopic Mehness > LYLYLY

What a strong day. I also forgot how much I missed messing up the songs' names in my rankings! One of the best parts of doing write-ups!

Rude Buster
Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Six Feet Thunder

I actually view both songs in match one pretty similarly. They've both got the same problem of backing/rhythm tracks that sound boring and repetitive and also tend to dominate over the song as a whole. (Dominant repetitive backing tracks aren't uniformly bad, but in these cases I don't like the groove either sets up.) However Rude Buster sprinkles on top some pretty interesting melodic lines which drive the song into the "solidly okay" range whereas Brain Power sprinkles on top empty monotone singing.

Both match 2 songs are pretty cool and I wish I could just vote for both of them. The Mighty Switch Force song I could probably describe similarly to match 1, and at the end of the day repetitiveness is probably the biggest thing holding this song back. However I like this songs groove a lot more than either of the match 1 songs. Also this one is somewhat more melody-driven and the melody line changes things up frequently enough that things are kept somewhat fresh. Silver Star Crystal Kaleido has really heckin cool vocals oh my gosh. Especially the part at 0:42. One other thing differentiating the song is that at least for me it paints a clearer atmospheric picture due to the combination of the accordion and the ethereal vocals. (Edit: Wait know these are bagpipes not accordions--wrong Celtic folk instrument...)

Not much I have to say on the TOC match.

Rude Buster
Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

-rude buster is fairly RUDE and most of my liking for it revolves around its initial looping four-bar groove but it's fine because it's a very groovy four bars indeed
-I think I am lacking the brain power right now for brain power and its wobble bass-y euro-infused intentions; nice lyrics though (actually that section with the stuttering vocals is probably my favourite part of the song yeah)

-kinda getting mid 90s anime vibes from ssck (something about the electronic production and the vocal mix, I think); filtered electronic percussion is a plus here; grows on me over time
-bright shiny catchy kaufman-- very virt; don't always love the progression but consistently high energy and 1:41 is great; feels like a track that would evoke "BANGER" comments in a vgmgg
-very close match; ask me on a different day and I might wobble (like brain power's bass)

-SOLD on IF~A's intro, as always; since this is like the tenth time I'm hearing this I note different things now like the fairly low-key portamento synth sitting under the whole track, or that strange panning... sound effect? every two bars-- I wonder what it's intended to represent; I enjoy 1:11 a lot more now than when I first heard this; I wonder which composer in the composer listing wrote this?! I bet it's Georges Bizet
-six feet THUNDER down under but instead of thunder it's organ runs; very danny b. in a previous vgmc I learned that there are two schools of people-- people who listen to portabellohead and think 'wow this is a pretty cool track and a standout from this game's soundtrack' and people who think 'man why portabellohead of all tracks from this soundtrack' and it was amazing to me how cleanly separated and unequivocal these two groups were. (I belong to the former group) as with a lot of danny b music I feel like there's a catchiness to this that I just can't get into; there are two really conventional endings to the progression starting at 1:11 and while both of them are obvious the one that was picked is the one I like less; it's a lot of stuff like this-- I inch closer to the music but each time I am rebuffed by it as it stands resolutely next to musical decisions I can't really enjoy. and honestly that's okay! it retired, and many other people enjoy it just fine

Ah, so that's what that synth is called? (edit: actually, you're just referring to how it's being used in a portamento manner, not actually the type of synth?) Moving on, the strange sound effect is supposed to be growling... I think (if that's what you're referring to). I mean, with a name like IF~Autumn, I think the music is supposed to represent nature. 1:11 is absolutely THE BEST part, I'm glad you finally realized it!!!

I'm not really sure what the synth is called! (I wish I knew-- it's cool) I described it as such because the synth sort of slides from note to note, but there's plenty of synths with a portamento effect that don't sound at all like it.
