But, it can.
Each state, right now, can allocate its electoral votes any way it wants. None do, apart from maybe Maine and Nebraska, because of some sort of "bastion" principle or something.

The electoral college is important to our elections.

98 votes in just 3 states as far as electoral college goes.
https://www.270towin.com/maps/bRgO6.png

By county. Between California and NY, They have a combined population of almost 60 million people.
https://metrocosm.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/election-map-by-county-3d-1.png

It would take, the top 9 most populated states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, which some of them are known to be very liberal, to win where as if NC voted red, along with the other 42 other states (counting DC) would win. so if those states voted blue every single GD time, we would never have a red president. Thats why the electoral college is so important..

it gives the less dense states like : Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, District of Columbia, Vermont, Wyoming more of a voice in the elections since all those states combined only has a population of 5.2 million people

And if every single one of them (which includes a whole bunch of children) voted for the same candidate, they'd have fewer votes than Trump in 2016

Yes we get it, you don't understand how the Electoral College works and why people want to bet rid of it. You literally just described why we should get rid of the Electoral College. Because red states vs blue states is how the president is determined, not by individual votes. Do you think literally every single person in California or New York is some far left wing raging liberal? This says more about you then anything. As of right now WITH the Electoral College if you are a Republican in California your vote for President doesn't count. There are more Democrats then Republicans in the state so casting an R vote has no effect on the outcome of the race.

If we got right of the Electoral College then do you know what would happen? Your vote would count. Popular vote is the most votes wins. So all those Republicans in California who either didn't vote or their vote didn't matter, well now their vote counts towards the total votes for whatever candidate they vote for. This means their vote actually matters now, unlike before. This also shows you didn't read my previous post describing exactly why it wouldn't become some silly thing like "only the coasts will matter."

And just as a general fyi, there are just as many red states on a coast as there are blue states.

Edit: Not being able to quote just a quote in this new system sucks. I had to copy and paste andnit put the name up as undefined. It wouldn't let me change it until I posted it then I could edit the name. Further it then gets rid of the hyperlink of the name like it is for all other posts. If this is working as intended then that is completely stupid.

It obviously exists because Republicans need a social safety net to get into office so they can take away the social safety net of others.

Probably for a similar reason as to why we have two houses in our legislative branch. Because they didn't want states with disproportionately high populations to have all the say.

There is no reason for the electoral college to exist. People always talk about state representation when this topic comes up, but that's a completely separate issue and not relevant to the existence of a group of random ass people that cast the "real" votes for president.

People who live their entire lives inside cities shouldnt be the only votes that matter.
Assuming that everyone that lives within a certain region of land thinks the same way is exponentially dumber than assuming that everyone left or right is hivemind. Even if both coasts voted 100% for a single candidate, that still wouldn't be enough votes. I feel like no one can properly envision a change in our system because American politics have polluted their brain. It's all Electoral College and two-party system and us vs them all the time

But you also have to take into consideration, how many people, especially the older population, who regardless is running for pres, automatically just straight up party votes.. and I mentioned earlier, yes cali and NY by themselves won't win..it takes at least the top 9 most populated states to win an election via popular vote, while fuck all for the other 42. especially considering the bottom 7 (counting DC) each have less than 1 mil in population.

It was created to protect the interests of slaveholders, who, while having large numbers of slaves, could only count them as 3/5 a person (who couldn't vote anyway). Look it up.

It has been retconned into a big state-small state thing, but that's all too often by the same people who want to retcon and defend the Confederate flag.

If I were running for president, I would simply get 100% of the popular vote across all 9 of the most populous states in the country

You gotta love this idea about making sure everyone's vote matters, but at the same time there's an idea that a Republican would never win another election, thereby making all Republican votes not matter.

that's not a problem with the structure of the voting process, that's a problem with the appeal of the Republican platform

And I think a party as focused on winning as the GOP would change its approach if a popular vote were in place. They wouldn't just resign themselves to losing every election; they would adapt.
