Because it makes no sense. If Anakin really was redeemed by killing Palpatine, then he was Anakin when he died, so why did he look like Anakin before he became Vader?

maybe because vader didnt want to project himself as a disfigured heavily burnt and modified man?

what do you guys want him to project as? big ass darth vader suit force projection?

In the original he just looked like old, unburned Anakin.

The "No. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" comes in second

thankfully, neither of those are in the original Special Editions

Exactly. No galaxy-spanning military-industrial power is going to collapse overnight just because the top two guys are dead. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of high-ranking people who believe in those ideals and will fight to keep their places. Palpy and Vader dying (not to mention the Death Star going kaboom) would certainly give the Rebellion a big shot in the arm, but it's not gonna lead to immediate regime change.

This is something that the EU got right, in that the Empire didn't just go away after Vader/Palpatine died.
Their deaths created a power vacuum that led to infighting among top imperial officers and led to rise of characters like Thrawn and Isard

It's kinda crazy that George Lucas decided to heavily tie Boba Fett to the Clone Troopers in the prequels. But this is a problem for him because the Clone Troopers have Kiwi accents. So he decides he'll fix that by overdubbing the old movies. Like nobody else does shit like this. Boba could be young enough to lose his accent anyway.

But I can't decide between Greedo shooting first and Anakin's ghost. The latter is probably slightly more offensive since he's shitting on an actor in the process too and the actor he does use also hates it.

Darth Vader's "nooo" and Hayden's force ghost are definitely my top "fuck you George" moments.

Ultimately voted for Vader's though because Return of the Jedi was my favorite of the original trilogy, and all the stuff involving Luke and Vader were my favorite scenes, and that one fucking addition just ruins all the weight and emotion of everything that proceeded it and follows.

It was the kick in the balls, with Hayden's force ghost as the spit in the eye. Bringing everything that made Anakin lame and cringey from the prequels into the OT was *the* greatest offense Lucas committed in the special editions as far as I'm concerned.

By the way the best change factually is making the Emperor's appearance consistent in Empire with the rest of the series.

Barely see anyone mention that one, so I wonder if people remember originally that he looked completely different.

Of these I actively dislike Jedi Rocks, Greedo shooting, Vader's no, losing yub nub and the ghost change.

While I think alot of the other stuff is unnecessary, I find it pretty inoffensive.

Nooooo makes me cringe every time I hear it so I picked that, but Greedo shooting first changes Han's character a bit and is a perfectly acceptable choice too.

Hayden force ghost isn't even bad at all. It makes sense in the continuity and it's not like we ever see older Anakin other than at the very end when he's white and bald and scarred up...looking drastically different that the original anakin force ghost did.

Most of the rest of that is pretty minor. I don't even think I've seen a version where Luke screams.

Jedi Rock and whatever crap they replaced the Ewok Celebration Song with are the ones that are most grating to me.

Although the extra scene with Jabba and Han in A New Hope irks me a lot as well, only because almost all the dialogue is repeated word for word from the conversation he *just* had with Greedo. I feel like Im taking crazy pills when I watch it.

Greedo shooting first damaged one of the most important characters in the Orig Trig. Han just murdering Greedo to get away introduces him as a dangerous and desperate smuggler, a guy with skills who lives on the edge of the galaxy. It gives his character a place to develop into as he becomes sympathetic to the Rebellion and focuses on more than just saving himself all the time. It also establishes him as somebody not to be fucked with, and makes it seem like a plus for the Rebellion when he helps them, which it definitely ends up being.

When Lucas ruined the scene it makes Han look like a desperate loser who only survived some low level lackey like Greedo because of luck, and removes a lot of the impact of his character. It's a little thing, but when it comes to characterization, little things really matter. That Lucas didn't get that shows why Star Wars was contemptible garbage when he was in sole control.

The rest of the stuff was all added after Lucas made it clear that he was nothing but a ruinous force toward the whole franchise, and it being crap is to be expected.

So does everything else in the special editions. They're 20 year old CG-heavy films. Of course they look bad even for the 90s but I digress.

But unlike most of the rest of this stuff, it's at least tonally consistent and doesn't ruin what was previously good writing and directing.

This. Literally almost none of the changes made in the special editions are consistent with the style of the original trilogy. Some of it just looks stupid, some of it ruins perfectly good scenes, and too much of it is that cartoony bullshit that the original trilogy NEVER had ANY of, but was common in the prequels.
