Literally only because I'm hooked on "Last Surprise", which I'm sure I've heard before but am now listening to repeatedly. What an earworm. And it being the battle theme was even more surprising!

It popped up again on my radar thanks to the youtube algorithm delivering this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDw6xxIErK4

And from there watched some more P5 videos, battle system looks fun, digging the art style and characterization, and the reviews on the game (when it came out 3+ years ago - yeah I know I'm late to the party here) are incredible. Seems like just a really fun game in general? And a good opportunity to branch out from my limited gaming ground (which is pretty much just Square RPGs, so not too far) and try something different, while also repeatedly listening to this song, and I'm sure more great music in the game.

Anyways, before I get it, I have a few questions for any fans to help me out here:

(1) Is the game independent from others in the series or is playing some previous entry/ies required?

(2) Would it really be worth it to wait for the P5 Royal release on PS4 or am I good to stick with the original base game? (and save $55 CDN in the process + play it sooner/strike while the iron is hot...)

(3) How long is the game (generally) and the platinum (specifically)? Would want to do a blind run without any guides, ideally.

I have serious trophy OCD and I've seen the game alleged to be 100 hours?? Free time is about to be a lot more sparse for me, and I have a few games I want to get out of my backlog this year + KH3 DLC and FF7R in the near future, so my concern is adding this in and either having to put in all those hours, or resorting to guides for the platinum which I'd rather avoid. Just wondering if it's really more like 40-50 hours or if that "100 hours" assessment is actually accurate...

Thanks!

1) Yes, independent
2) Royal changes the battle theme actually so if Last Surprise was a big pull...>_>. Not sure if you can switch between them? I would assume so but I don't know
3.) I'd assume at least 100 for the platinum especially without guides, maybe more, but I dont know what it takes for the platinum. Think I put in around 60-80. Persona games are pretty long

does anyone even read this

you can't get platinum in first playthrough because there is a requirement that is only available in NG+. it would definitely take at least 100 hours and i think that's low-balling it.

There's no way you'll get the platinum trophy with 1 playthrough, going to be basically impossible without a guide. That being said you should absolutely play it and yeah I'd just wait for Royal at this point.

1. Yeah, independent. There are the smallest of cameos here and there but they're throwaway and not significant.

2. This is up to you, IMO. I would wait in your position since we're pretty close to Royal but how the reduced cost and time factor in is up to you.

3. Normal playthrough is probably 80 hours maybe? I play games, particularly RPGs, super slow so it's much longer for me. Platinum can't be done on a first playthrough and even if it could doing it blind would be quite challenging, especially without prior series experience breaking you into knowing how to minmax time in-game via familiarity with the systems. So for the platinum you'd need to a second playthrough regardless, and while you can go through one much faster, how much faster may depend on how much you accomplished in the first one (like do you just need the one trophy that requires NG+ or do you have some other trophies you didn't get playing blind. That kind of thing.)

I think Last Surprise is the battle theme if you don't get a surprise/advantage attack (ironically.) This would mean you could control what plays at will, but to get Last Surprise over Take Over (the new battle theme in Royal) you'd have to pass over a surprise attack if you have one available. Not 100% sure on that though.

It's not P4 good, but it's still a damn good game.

Royal isn't adding much for people who have already played, but for a newcomer it's absolutely going to be the way to go if the big difference in price isn't the deciding factor.

And yeah, you won't be hearing a lot of Last Surprise in Royal unless you fuck up. The new song is decent but not remotely on the same level. P4 Golden fucked that up, too!

Thanks everybody - appreciate the input!

Decided to shelve the immediate plans to play it, and if I can't get the song out of my head I'll go the tried-and-tested method of listening to it repeatedly until I'm over it.

If I can work through the backlog + planned new pickups, which is looking as follows:

-KH3 Critical Mode & DLC
-The Last Guardian
-A thorough replay of the Midgar portion of FF7, before...
-FF7 Remake
-Death Stranding
-Papers Please
-Vagrant Story

And then maybe the long-put-off Xenogears replay, and the Xenosaga trilogy replay with the HD remaster dream dead.

After all that, then maybe it'll be Persona 5 time...!

I will add that the Persona 5 Royal Platinum is infinitely easier and removed all the hard trophies. Hell you might be able to do it without a guide, and I think it's possible on one playthrough

P4 Golden had the superior battle theme! Reach Out to the Truth is the most overrated song in the series. Time to Make History all day every day.

As far as P5 goes, I'll just say that it'll be very difficult to go back to previous games in the series if you end up loving it and want to explore the previous entries. The gameplay improvements are just so dramatic compared to the other games.

Is Golden the Royal for that one? is it also on PS2 or any later gen system? I guess if the PS2 is going to see action for the Xenosaga replay it could for that too...

I thought it wasn't out for a few more months, the trophy list already is? Or it came out in Japan already, or the list leaked? This is definitely a plus in its favour though.

Yeah, Golden is the updated version of Persona 4. It's on Vita. PS2 has the original version.

It released in Japan a few months ago.

It's 100 MINIMUM played casually imo. Maybe 120 if it's your first Persona. It sounds like a crazy number and it's definitely got some padding, but it's surprisingly engaging and fun even beyond the 100 hour mark. I think I only started to get tired and rush the story in the very end. Usually I do that after like 15 hours.

The way I would describe it is like an entire anime series. It takes a long time but you will want to get through it. But you can go at your own pace. No need to binge it all at once. Put it down for a while then pick it back up.

Royal would be my recommendation because it will probably have a lot more stuff, but it is true that the battle theme is different... Wait and see if there's an option to change it I guess.

I mean, the original P4 is still really good, too! P4G adds a lot of nice quality of life updates though.
