I'm sitting down at this cramped cafe today and in walks this old woman who sit down at the table next to me with what must be an 85lbs german shephard that parks up inches from my crotch.

All I can think is, what are you gonna do lady if this dog suddenly decides I'm a threat for being too close to you or whatever? Thing has a jaw like a hydraulic press.

I just ignored it and it was fine but it always bothers me.

Depends on the breed. Some big dogs like mastiffs are actually gentle giants that wouldn't hurt a fly

Not really. If one randomly approached me I would be more wary than I would with a small dog, but I don't have an innate fear of the bigger breeds. In my experience they are almost always more friendly than small dogs

Strike on its back behind the shoulders using your hand.

It hurts like crazy and if done too sharply can injure it but if you have to get a dog off you or someone else thats how.

While I do understand people's fear of dogs, I've never been afraid around them. They're pretty clear if they're friendly or not.

If a dog is standoffish, leave it be. If it's just shy, it may warm up to you in its own time. If it seems aggressive or territorial, don't challenge it. It's a rare thing for one to just attack without warning. There's *almost* always a signal

Nah not really. Dogs are usually predictable and readable, which makes it hard to be really afraid of them. I would be a little wary of a large dog I didn't know that shows up out of nowhere though.

No but I've seen some nasty dog bites where fingers were removed >_> So it does make me cautious around them

not really, dogs are usually fairly easy to read and large dog breeds tend to be a lot more mellow than the small ones
