I'm not moving the plot just yet, but the side quests. They want me to go to Whithill or something. I bought this on sale on the PSN store, but I don't have time and I tried to get a refund, but learn Sony doesn't do returns once you download the game. Stupid Sony.

The first playthrough is so overwhelming. I had missed that feeling until I played The Witcher 3.

You can use a custom map maker to follow too if the quest hasn't got one

https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Skyrim

Best site ever. It has all the quests and more.
I would strongly advise doing the main quest until you check out the dragon attack on the guard tower, about 3 missions in.

Destruction magic isn't the best as you get higher levels so you might want to try melee or archery too.

You may want to hold off the main quest with the dragon attack at a tower. The random dragon attacks in the wild start happening after that mission.

Sneaky archer is one of the easier, more OP ways to play. If you want additional help, start learning conjuration -- you can train it by summoning a bound weapon, sheathing it (making it disappear), then repeating. There's also a companion in Dragonborn that you can get free conjuration training from (pay them, take it out of their inventory, repeat).

Alternatively you may want to push on with the main quest until you reach one called A Blade in the Dark, which stops all random dragon attacks. You can still fight dragons at word walls, but will not spawn them at random encounter nodes.

Yeah, I always play the main quest up to A Blade In The Dark, and then I tell Delphine I dont want to help her. Now I have the complete Fus Roh Dah shout and I can do any non main quest without having to deal with random dragons bogging me down.

Precisely why I like open world games that open themselves up slowly (PS2 GTA).

Welp, never been aware of this until now. You may have just saved Skyrim for me. Can I ask, how far into the main quest is this one, and how much main quest is left after it?

I used to love open world/sandbox games. But i've become too old and crabby. I'll just feel like i spent a whole bunch of time accomplishing nothing at all, which I get enough at work.

Can I ask, how far into the main quest is this one,
After you meet the Greybeards and get sent on an errand you'll find a note asking you to go to a specific spot with a code phrase. That is where you can stop the main quest to stop random dragon attacks,

All in all it's fairly early, and you get the benefit of the Greybeards sending you to various word walls on the map and in dungeons.

Not too far. Its right after you get the full Fus Roh Dah shout. Just get the horn from Delphine and deliver it to the graybeards, BUT DONT AGREE TO GO ON DELPHINES QUEST YET!

Excellent, thanks! I will probably start a new playthrough this weekend now that I know this.

I've 175hrs on Skyrim and I've not finished the main quest once.

Basically, when I played, I'd just explore about collecting treasure until I got bored.

The thing about Skyrim is that you can follow the quest markers for like 99% of whats happening and never worry about getting lost. Morrowind is much easier to get lost in.

It doesn't help that sometimes the directions you receive for certain quests are vague or unclear in some way. So you're left roaming the hilltops looking for clues as endless waves of Cliff Racers assault you.

Not to mention every single cave, dungeon, etc. is a big loop so there's no getting disoriented or lost in those, either.
