I love how even with a total blowout nobody is going "maybe Labour put up an untenable set of policies led by an awful leader who waffled on the biggest issue of their time that every other party openly stated would never be PM".

Yea, everyone in the UK is just stupid. That's it.
You honestly don't have a clue about UK politics. There's been an outright smear campaign throughout the media against Corbyn since he first became leader including from the BBC, Tory propaganda and lies about the effects of brexit have been in overdrive the last few months. In opinion polls done where policies are presented without party names Labour's policies are very popular.

Oh please. Corbyn is a snake. When you have every other party considering a temporary coalition just to get Boris out of the PM spot and they all collectively say the only way they'll do it is if Corbyn steps down the moment they do so, you know something is wrong. His own party has been bleeding members for years now over his divisiveness, including high profile members and members that have been Labour for decades.

This. But really. The Scots do not want a brexit. They voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU. When brexit finally does happen the Scots will demand another referendum on whether they wish to remain in the UK, and it's highly likely that the Scots, pissed off by a brexit they overwhelmingly opposed, this time will vote to leave.

Northern Ireland has already said they don't want a closed border with Ireland again, and also voted against brexit, will probably follow the Scottish out of the UK. These two things combined with the damage to the London economy (which is heavily based on cheap EU migrant labor from Eastern Europe) will bring about serious damage to the English economy.

The worst part is, they are going to do it to themselves, this vote was their chance to reconsider and instead they doubled down.

Wouldnt those 2 just join the EU?
Maybe

But joining and leaving the EU isn't a simple thing, global trade and economics means years of businsesses fucking up, boarder issues.

Lots of companies were prepared to either close down or relocate if Scotland left the UK. God knows what would happen if every company that did business between Scotland and England had to deal with different laws and a hard boarder.

How would the health service work?

IT would be years if not decades of utter chaos and uncertainity and no matter what the ultimate result was, economically it will be weaker than unified UK.

I think people get hung up on the word "independence" by itself and completely lose track of what they are actually talking about.

This isn't a mom telling you to clean your room. It's more like removing the room from the home entirely and then claiming it's better when you're stuck in a disembodied cold single room with no floor and no electricity, no bathroom ,no kitchen, no fridge and one bad weather day away from colasping due to no structual support.

But hey, mom's not telling you to clean it anymore! Independence!

from an asset pricing perspective this result is extremely positive for UK assets, stocks are going to rally massively, GBP strengthened immediately

hedge funds all were betting on this result because Boris winning was the obvious outcome, long GBPUSD was a super super crowded trade because it was such a good trade

on market open we are going to see big moves up in stocks (specifically UK domestic companies) and the GBP is going to be strong, likely above 1.34-1.35

financially, corbyn would have been a disaster for asset prices in the UK, so from that perspective this result is certainly a more favourable outcome (politics/ideology aside)

if the results end up being in line with the exit polls, this is also a stunning rejection by the British population of the hard left brand of labour party politics that have influenced the party over the past decade

It ain't shit mate. What it is a sign is that Corbyn led an abysmal campaign, and far too many took to hear the smear campaign alongside his own disastarious efforts, along with people still believing Brexit is in their interests.

Yeah, it's pretty clear Corbyn got too cute with Brexit: he essentially tried to straddle the middle. The weakness of such a strategy was temporarily masked by May's incompetence, but it weakened Labour's position in the long run. It left them with nothing to offer Leave voters(who could just vote for BoJo, who successfully made the Tories the sole Leave party) while alienating Remain voters. Given that those voting blocs are roughly the same size, well, the numbers speak for themselves.
That the press smeared him is also undeniable, but there's not anything that can be done about that. Sad though it is, poor old Jeremy is going to have to take a tumble under the bus for the team after this one. He is, at this point, undeniably holding the British Left back.

They'll 100% blame this on Corbyn (even though they were praising him before the election) or the media in order to keep up the delusion that a large number of people still support a discredited 19th century economic system developed by a sociologist.

Labour made gains under Corbyn in 2017. The policies proved popular among voters. Nationalised industry is not new to the UK and we have had it before.

Since then they dropped their article 50 pledge, committed to a second referendum, and lost over 2 million votes.

What I think a lot of Americans don't understand about the UK is that our former industrial and mining areas, that would be rampant Trump over there, are historically left wing.

Labour made gains in 2017 primarily due to May's gross unpopularity combined with UKip more or less completely collapsing. You can see in the chart below that their gains were almost entirely at the expense of other parties. And those gains were basically a recovery of what they lost from Milbrand, not any significant change in the status quo.

Their biggest problem right now is identity. Corbyn brought in a ton of new, young Labour voters whose positions on issues were fairly strongly different from older members, and Corbyn never quite figured out how to resolve that issue. It's why he waffled so hard on Brexit (because his own party was split on the issue), and why a number of high profile, long-time members have been leaving recently. As Sir Patrick Stewart said when he quit Labour after being a member for 70 years, he "finds it difficult to understand what Labour really stands for or what it represents right now".
