Seriously. It happens often enough to where people and their families are terrorized and there have even been people killed (see: SWATing) and pushed to suicide. That kind of psychological harm should be taken more seriously IMO

You would never find enough proof you made someone desperate enough to want to kill themselves.

ive been doxed before and accounts hacked but considering i dont have any real pictures of myself on any social media and i never use my real name they ended up with nothing and i laughed.

yeah if someone found me on fb it would be a big nothingburger because I have my privacy locked down too. I know the habits of people online too well so I protect myself

but its still not an excuse

I think that case with the psycho girl who pushed that guy over the edge (iirc it was at Boston college) sets enough of a precedent, even though the context is different

I was watching a show called My Internet Nightmare, where they told the story of a woman who was harassed online for almost a year - the person was keying her car, deflating her tires, eventually he was posting ads on Craiglist with photoshopped pictures of her face on adult actress bodies with comments like "I have a rape fetish, just come break down my door and take me", and shit like that. The guy even eventually started targeting her two daughters with the same antics (using pictures where they were even fucking minors). And the cops didn't do anything about it.

Then she met a guy who said he would protect her, texted her "friend" and said she found someone that was going to take the stalker out... and then the next morning she got arrested and sent to jail for 11 months awaiting trial for threatening to order a hit on a person.

Turns out the stalker was her "friend" - he and his accomplice also got arrested; I don't know how long they sat awaiting trial, but according to the story they took a plea bargain and were sentenced to 350 hours of community service. Talk about fucking injustice.

Tbf that guy who SWATted that family did get 20 years. Arguably not enough considering an innocent man died but then again I blame the police as much if not more so for that.

That isn't harassing someone online. That's harassing someone in real life.

SWATing should definitely be classed as attempted murder, or actual murder for those times someone did die.

DOXing in general needs to have the hammer dropped on it. Like multiple decades of prison for any sort of dox attempt

Which forms of doxing do you believe have a fine punishment as-is

I don't think it should be illegal to reproduce any information that someone has publicly shared online connected to their real name.

Okay but what exactly is doxxing here

obviously if someone deliberately finds you offsite and harasses you or shares personal and identifiable information about you yes absolutely doxxing

The part I struggle with is say my name is samusovercloud right. I share my selfie in the CE selfie chat. Then someone shares that somewhere else. That's NOT doxxing. I put my picture there publicly.

Matchabuu you post selfies. If you also make your other social media accounts with the same username and someone finds them and you have naughty pics or something then they get posted elsewhere for example how is that doxxing. Its absolutely nothing that you didnt already publicly display. This is just an example not real ofc

It's also pretty sad when people use the same username across platforms theb get all upset when people find them. Theres countless cases on gamefaqs alone about that.

Oh hey I better make my reddit account with pics and identifiable info and all my subbed fetish subreddits the exact same fucking name as my gamefaqs account
Soooo stupid you get what you get there I mean

This.

Woke culture and cancel culture are trivializing what doxxing really means.

If you argue with someone online and go find out their real life identity, that's doxxing.
If you argue with someone online and contact them in real life, that's doxxing.
If you call the SWAT or cops on someone you argued with online that is NOT doxxing, that's far worse, I don't know if there's a name for it, but it might as well be tentative murder.

But if you post your pic or something stupid online, out there for everyone to see, and people make fun of it, that's not doxxing. If Johhny B posts his pic and someone makes a topic saying "Johnny B's pants are too tight in this pic, LMAO", that is not doxxing. It would only be doxxing if the caption said "Johnny B is actually James Smith, he lives in 1243 street address, zip code 111111, and his email is [email protected]".

We need to have more death penalty punishments in America.

If we had the death penalty mandatory for like 30-40 crimes I bet they would not be done

Way back when my son was born I posted pics of him, his mom, and myself to CE.
Some guys on here found her facebook and harrassed us relentlessly.

Never again will I post pics of any women in my life. Good going CE.

The US is too light on criminals compared to countries like China

Like I said we need to have more death penalty cases and really long severe imprisonments for people like this. Imagine what one of these jerks would do if they're facing 70 years in a maximum security prison to be passed around by gangs and brutalized.

We have more people in prisons than any other country in the world, including China, who has a 5x greater population than us.
