I had no idea about this, which is very surprising, because it seems like an extremely important part of Christian history.

Shortly after Jesus' death, Christians divided into 2 factions. There was Paul, who wanted to do things one way; there was James, Jesus' brother, who wanted to do things another way. Basically (this is simplified, of course), James didn't actually think Jesus was the Son of God, but just an important Jewish / Christian leader. Paul thought that Jesus was divine, shepherds and wise men came to visit him on his birth, etc. There was a (non-violent) conflict between the 2 groups, and eventually Paul created what we now consider to be Christianity. The thing is, Paul and many of his people generally didn't actually meet Jesus during his life, and so it gives rise to serious problems with the accuracy of the Gospels. James did. This makes me wonder what kind of a religion I've been encouraged to follow since birth.

Did you know this? Thoughts on all this? I can't believe I didn't know this stuff before. Apologies to any Christians on this board if I got details wrong, or simplified too much.

There are so many loopholes in the Bible it doesnt even really make sense. There was that story about the Ark and the bird and the letter or what not that was a direct copy of some other story as well that just makes you go Hmmm.

I think religion is there to keep everyone believing in a heaven so no nobody just goes on a killing rampage and doesnt have to worry about burning in hell or what not.

Assuming Jesus existed, I'd trust his bro over a dude that never met him. So maybe the whole thing is just a scam concocted by Paul

The man known as Jesus definitely existed.

The only question is in regards to his divinity.

What is your evidence that James didn't believe Jesus was the Son of God?

This. I looked for this, and there indeed seems like Paul had disagreements, but that was over eating with gentiles, and I think was with Peter.

I'm gonna assume this is some hullabaloo about James possibly not mentioning divinity explicitly, and sects later forming gnostic groups coming to that conclusion, probably without James.

Imagine being the brother to jesus, how could you ever live up to your brother being literal god.
