Many of the lottery winners go broke and/or regret winning.

What would you do when your family/friends start asking for some of your $100 million+?

Considering how many of my problems it would immediately fix, yes, I would be content.

No concerns about begging family/friends either since the only family I'm worried about is in the same financial slump I'm in (so of course I would help them), and I have no friends (don't need/want any either).

I mean, having to actually act fast and start setting up plans with what to do with the money longterm (and more importantly, what to do about keeping anyone and everyone off my back for handouts) would probably be overwhelming and stressful, but no I would not be unhappy with winning the lottery.

Yes.

I would claim it anonymously if possible, pretty much delete all social media and then get a new phone number if people started harassing me.

You can accept it anonymously in some states. And in the ones where you cant accept it anonymously you can just create trust which will basically allow you do that anyway

I feel like the reason most people who win the lottery end up broke is because they are so bad with money that they actually buy lottery tickets.

This is a good point. I'll never win because I never buy tickets, but probably 99.9% of the people who do buy tickets don't win enough to break even.

Wow, what a loaded question. You assume the people I (or we) care about are the type to feel "alienated" if they're not given handouts on command?

If you father asks you for loads of money, would you turn him down? What if he wants to start a business and needs $5 million?

I stop them. I demand my anonymity.

And I also threaten them that I'll destroy the life of anybody who mentions my identity. Piss off the guy who just won $100+ million at your own risk.

It depends on the state, in some states you can only claim the money if your identity is revealed.

What the hell kind of business is he going to start as a 65 year old man on full disability, let alone one that costs five million dollars?

That's assuming my dad is even the kind of person who would ask for money to begin with, which he wouldn't. He's firmly opposed to accepting hand-outs.

Didn't know specifically about your dad, but I mean in general. Parents will surely ask their lottery-winning child for money. Are you really going to say no?

You're doing this thing where you're pretending to ask me what I would do, but you're actually asking what the general population would do.

And the general population would run out of money within five years.

I think you would do better with it then, but many people would succumb to family members and friends asking for money.

Hardly any of them do, actually. Big jackpots, anyway.

The study thats cited when people throw around the whole half of people who win the lottery go bankrupt within five years (or whatever the made up statistic is) was done on a small group of people who won between $50,000-$150,000. Not nothing, but not exactly life-changing amounts of money.
