Apparently there are people that let them go to waste and some that dont.

For me, I use up every single one. Usually 1 a month sometimes 2, I just fake being sick to be off, I mean if you dont use it you lose it so take advantage and have a day off!

Besides this, my previous jobs demanded that you bring a copy of your diagnosis/prescription/etc. for it to count as a sick day, or else you're just skipping work without leave and docked pay and performance accordingly.

Fucking all of them all the time. I LOVE not being at work.

Lucky my company does have sick or vacation days, just PTO you can use for any reason with no explanation needed.

I usually just cash mine out at the end of the year. I'm only legit sick like once every few years and with our work flow there are weeks where I only go in for like 20hrs during the slow season. I'm not overworked to where I need the time off to goof around.

I pretty much can't call off right now because there's nobody to replace me. It fucking sucks. However, I am getting all my PTO before the end of the year so I don't lose anything. I'm fucking burnt like bad casserole right now but I have a week off in 2 weeks and another in December and I can't wait.

I have 150 sick hours saved rn. My department gives us 3 bonus days in return a year if we call in sick less than 3 times a year. Both can be cashed out when you retire. 1,500 sick hours is the max at like 43 an hour, and you can carry 400 bonus hours

My job for the state lets you accumulate paid sick leave indefinitely and then cash it out on retirement

Like, I left a job for the state when I was younger, then came back (in a totally different position) years later but still had sick leave banked up from my previous job

That said, Ive only used 1 hr for a dental appointment since starting back again

I dont plan on it. You can save your suck time where I work and stack it to retire a bit early. I'm told some people have retired 2 years early by saving it but I bet thats counting vacation time. Vacation time doesnt roll over but if you dont use it it gets added to your sick time. I plan to take vacations though. It's already good enough to me all you need here is 30 years in to fully retire so I'll be good right around 60. Starting to wish I hired on when i was 21 coulda retired at 51.

I use all of mine. But apparently we're going to start getting written up if we miss more than 6 days per year. I'm on my last write-up because of a manager who was abusing his power was trying to get rid of me because he was jealous that all the lady co-workers like me, and I was forced to step down in order to save my job.

I think we only accumulate a sick day every 2 months, though, so if I only call out when I have sick time, it shouldn't be a factor.

TC is probably referring to PAID sick days. Most companies will only pay you if you miss work so many times per year, or like in my case, we accumulate them after working so many hours.

Don't Australians, like, not are Americans, though?

Word on the street is, in not-US, you have Government-mandated minimum vacation policies, and the minimum is some astronomical amount like six weeks.

At my last job, I got one week, and the company closed for two weeks every year for Christmas so I had to use it then and still have no paycheck one of thiae weeks. Second year, I got two weeks. By the time I quit, I had worked my way up to three weeks, so that was nice to actually have a week to use when I wanted.

I didn't used to, because it rolled over, but since they changed the policy I do.

I get 160 PTO hours at the beginning of the year, and 24 personal (sick) hours.
Plus I was grandfathered 230 hours when they changed their policy.

I typically don't use all of my PTO.

My company gives out vacation sick and personal. I am currently at 4 weeks vacation, 3 sick 2 personal per year. Most years i end up with a couple of sick and vacation left over.

I actually like to work. I am paid salary and I'm all call 24/7/365, including holidays. I only use sick days for when I'm actually too sick to go into work, which isn't often.

Out of those 4 weeks of vacation, i typically take 1 week where i am not reachable. Like a cruise or out of the country. The rest of the time I'll still take calls even if I'm off. If something significant happens where i work really late or excessively on the weekends I can typically take a couple hours off my normal day.

Being so available and loyal has helped me move up in the company. I am very happy with what i have worked towards in my career and how i can provide for my family.

That is dumb. Not every illness needs medical attention. It discourages using sick days by imposing a higher financial and time cost on already miserable workers and Should be something only applied rarely on untrustworthy workers.

The flu is highly contagious but doctors can't do shit for it. If you are otherwise healthy literally just rest, and keep hydrated. Getting medical care for the flu as a healthy young-middle age adult is probably harmful more often than not wasting money, extra stress and probably spreading it more.

Same for food poisoning. Unless its an extreme case usually just wait a day or three and it passes. All going to the doctor does is ruin some pairs of underwear and make you doubly miserable.

Both only need medical care usually for the very young, very old or those with compromised immune systems.

Calling in sick more is a good thing(I don't trust CE but still). People come in with contagious diseases far too often. It hurts productivity, and spreads disease.

I daresay literally tens or even hundreds of thousands of deaths a year would be avoided if people callled off more with Flu and various other highly contagious diseases.

If its contagoius or causes diarrhea/vomiting and/or is worse than a standard cold call off. I have gotten so many illnesses from sick people coming to work or coming out to eat.

Keep your Flu, Strep, etc. at home.

And overall productivity would actually increase.

It's one of those things where they don't want you coming in when you are sick just because you ran out of sick days. At the same time, if you take too many sick days your boss will be having a talk with you.

I have vacation days for that. I use my sick days when I'm actually sick - in my line of work, that includes laryngitis and mental health days (not the "I don't feel like working" kind, the "I'm mentally burning out and need to step away before I make a mistake with a customer" kind). I'm encouraged to use them for both.

We have PTO for all time off at my job, sick or vacation. But we do get a $10 bonus for every month we don't call out sick, $50 for a quarter without a callout (Jan-March, April-June, etc.) and $200 for a year without a callout (I should be getting my third yearly bonus for this soon) as I've now worked here four years and only called out once.
