Alex is probably the one I want the most. I spent a good five to ten minutes thinking about a Reno Paladin deck using those no neutral cards before I realized there was a pretty serious problem I was overlooking.

General first impression of the full set:

Neutral commons and rares: really strong almost across the board. Like...5/5 Azure Drake at common, ok.

Neutral epics: fairly weak/niche.

Class commons and rares: good, a few duds, but also some cycles that look strong across the board.

Class epics: There's a lot of really good ones unfortunately. Like the 5/5 that deals 5 if you're overloaded. Probably going into just about every shaman deck. All the invoke payoff cards.

Legendaries: Seem...fine--mostly strong but pretty niche so that I won't feel bad if I don't have em. Ones liable to annoy me (If I don't open them) are the Rogue Vilespine Slayer legendary, and maybe Kronx Dragonhoof if I decide that it's core to Galkarond decks. (I think a lot of the Galkarond decks I have planned at the moment don't actually plan to play Galk itself, just use the invoke, so maybe this won't be a big deal). Kronx reminds me of Twin Emp Veklor, and I spent a good year annoyed that I didn't have that card, but also not wanting to craft it because I didn't think C'Thun decks were good enough to invest that much dust.

Really strong neutrals and really strong rare and common neutrals means we'll probably see some class homogenization where decks lean on the same core neutrals. Granted, deck full of mostly neutrals was like...the meta a year or two ago, but it is interesting; I was under the impression they were drifting away from that kind of design.

Lots of important class epics will likely just piss me off. I don't like to go around and craft a ton of class epics (unless I'm sure I'll play the class and the epic a lot). But when there's a lot of important epics this does leave me feeling like there's a lot of archetypes I can't play.

This expansion has me hyped for some potential boring but effective midrange decks. Unironically there's nothing I enjoy more in Hearthstone than playing the largest card in my hand every turn until I win the game.

Nerfing Sniplock in wild, new heroes and nerfs to make the op ones more balanced in battlegrounds, wild packs are purchaseable, this set is gonna be like an adventure

I'm a little skeptical about having an adventure with new cards 2 months after set release; is this raising it to 6 times a year that things need to be purchased instead of 3? Cause that'll make it a lot harder for F2P players.

Alright, my thoughts on some of the cards in the set

Neutrals

0 mana (kind-of)

The new 2/2 pirate (Parachute Brigand). It's a new Patches the Pirate, with two downsides. First, you need to draw it. Second, when you pull it out for free, you effectively discard a card (unlike patches). I believe this does go in all the pirate decks (even in wild) but it's not as gamebreaking as people think.

1 mana

2/2 - this year's Dire Mole I guess; expect to see a lot of it for the next year. No creature type this time.

0/5 Depth Charge - the new doomsayer. IDK how good this is. 5 health is less than 7, and I don't think costing 1 less helps that much. But on the other hand, you can buff and heal this to the point where it doesn't actually kill itself, which is interesting.

1/2 mech gain 1 health at start of turn (Hot Air Balloon). It's...IDK. It's no 1 mana 1/3 mech. I'm guessing Mecharoo will usually be more annoying to kill.

2 mana

2/3 Zola for dragons (Dragon Breeder). This seems obviously good in dragon decks. Zola at 1 less mana with 1 more health. Prepared to be wrong about this one, though, dragons weren't often Zola targets.

2/1 poisonous can't be targeted. No.

3/2 swap hero powers with opponents (Grizzled Wizard). People are already talking about running this with like...shadowform to blow up their opponent's quest hero power.

2/2 deathrattle give a dragon +2/+2. Shaky Zipgunner for only dragons...nah.

2/3 "Transmogrifier". But why tho.

3/2 transform all neutral cards into class cards. I think the archetype that'll be most looking for this is Paladin Paladin, or people doing weird stuff with Hakar.

3 mana

4/3 deathrattle shuffle two 1/1s into your opponent's deck. (Bad Luck Albatross). It's...interesting. It's kind of like Weasel Tunneler, but with ok stats when you play it. If your opponent draws a 1/1 this card was worth it, so it's ideal in midrangey decks that expect to last about 15 turns. Also worth it if they don't draw it but they're playing highlander or Paladin Paladin and you disable a couple of their cards. Seems...narrow though.

3/4 your opponent's next hero power costs 3. Meh. If you want to counter wild even decks, this is a pretty nasty turn 3 play, but this is pretty marginal against most other decks.

3/4 has +3 attack for each other of ~this~ you control. Are you looking for a Beast version of Spider Tank? This is a better option than Augmented Elek.

1/3 battlecry gain +1 attack for each card in your opponent's hand. The comparison I've seen is to Goblin Sapper, which is a 2/4 that gets +4 attack if your opponent is holding 6 cards. The 4 health matters a lot I think, and Goblin Sapper also sucked.

3/3 if you control a mech gain +1/+1 and rush. (Goboglide Tech). Sam this into your mech decks IMO.

3/4 your minions can't be frozen. Elemental. I do hate being frozen, so I kinda want that in a deck TBH. I probably shouldn't run it, buuuut...temptation is high.

3/3 Battlecry: if you're holding a dragon deal 2 damage (Scalerider). It's SI:7 for dragon decks, and literally the only dragon relevant card at 3 mana or below. Run this in your dragon decks.

4 mana

Devoted Maniac--2/2 rush invoke. Most of the invoke cards look really strong to me, where getting one of those hero powers actually makes the card sound worth playing on its own. This card is the exception. With the shaman galk it's...a 2/2 rush and a 2/1 rush. That's basically a 4 damage spell to enemy minions for 4 mana which is pretty...meh. With the Warlock Galk you get a 2/2 rush and two 1/1s. By comparsion at 4 mana you could get Hench Clan Hag for a 3/3 and two 1/1s (no rush but 3/3 is quite a bit bigger than 2/2). I'm...underwhelmed.

Dragonmaw Poacher--4/4 if your opponent controls a dragon gain +4/+4 and rush. Probably one of those cards you just slam into every deck on day 1, but becomes more niche as people realize dragons aren't as busted as they thought.

5/4 can't be targeted by spells or hero powers. Dragon. Don't think this makes the cut

Frizz Kindleroost: 5/4 battlecry reduce the cost of dragons in your deck by 2. I was having some debates with people on reddit about this card, but I think people are overhyping it when they call it the new keleseth. At some point, cost reduction stops mattering, when you run out of cards in hand (around 10 mana) so you have to draw this, and then after that draw important cost reduced dragons before you are just sitting on excess mana anyway. (Exceptions for combo malygos decks, but I don't think this is a great combo enabler since you need to not draw Malygos first to set up combos with this).

2/6 rush taunt. I...don't think this makes the cut in most decks, but it's a lot closer than all the other 2/6 taunts we've gotten recently.

4/2 equip one of your destroyed weapons. Pirate. I...am not sold on this card. Almost never good on turn 4 cause the weapons that are dead by that point are rarely worth reviving. Pretty sure it would equip a 1/3 Kingsbane, so that's not very useful. If you get like a firey war axe or better out of it, that's probably acceptable value for the mana, but you need to actually play and destroy that weapon first, which won't always happen fast.

3/3 deal 3 damage to a random enemy minion. (Troll Batrider) It's...technically neutral Flanking Strike if you're lucky. Bomb Lobber got some real play in constructed (5 mana 3/3 deal 4 damage to a random target) so this actually probably will too.

2/5 has +2 attack for each dragon in your hand. One dragon makes this a yeti. I am jaded and don't expect much from this style of card, though.

3/9 taunt, battlecry summon three 1-cost minions for your opponent. (Zudark Ritualist) Fairly garbage in a generic deck; if you assume all three summons will just attack into the taunt, it's like a 3/4 or 3/5 taunt. However...If you have a plan to resurrect it, cheat it into play without triggering battlecry, or just really hate wild big priest, though, I guess it might find a home? Arguably goes straight into wild Jade Druid as the taunt you want to summon off of Oaken Summons, and giving the middle finger to big priest is still relevant for wild jade druid.

5 mana

Big Ol Whelp: 5/5 battlecry: draw a card. Dragon. I'm slamming this card into basically every deck on launch, including non-dragon decks.

0/3 egg, secretly discover a dragon to hatch into. Deathrattle: hatch. ...Meh. We know what an egg needs to hatch into at 5 mana, and it's an 8/8 (Mechan'o'egg). This is going to hatch way smaller than 8/8 a lot of the time.

3/5 Dragon. Battlecry: add two 1-cost spells to your hand. (Cobalt Spellkin). This looks...pretty good actually? A 5 mana 3/5 is a bit slow, though, so not all decks will want it.

Faceless Corruptor: 5/4 rush, Battlecry: transform one of your minions into a copy of this. People have been hyping this card up as neutral oasis surger which...I mean, obviously you need a minion to transform and it's 5/4, but yeah, still plenty strong.

4/4 battlecry steal your opponent's weapon. Most decks would be happier with Harrison, I think. (Extra kick in the teeth to wild Kingsbane decks though?)

Platebreaker: 5/5 destroy your opponent's armour. Still shocked that this is a thing.

Shield of Galkarond: 4/5 taunt invoke. Really good card. Most of the invoke effects are worth adding about 2 mana to get, which makes this kind-of like a 4/5 taunt for 3. Just...pushed.

3/3 murloc, If you're holding a dragon summon two random murlocs. (Skyfin). I mean, power-level wise this is fine if you're holding a dragon. Like...I play Murloc Knight in my wild Even Paladin, and Murloc Knight into 1 mana hero power is a real solid turn 5 play and requires no other muloc synergy. This is pretty similar. But...man, I also remember Blackwing Technician, which like yeah it was a 3 mana 3/5, but often got cut from decks cause it wasn't a dragon. I'm skeptical if "make a decent pile of stats on the board" is enough of an incentive to run a non-dragon in a dragon deck.

6/5. Each player draws a card, swap their costs. (Tentacled Menace). Super niche for some weird druid ramp deck or big paladin deck or something. Most decks just run Big ol' Welp so you don't draw your opponent a card.

Looking at Metroid's opinions...

0-3
Blazing Battlemage - A 1 mana 2/2 is nice, but I don't think it's actually *that* nice. Still dies to any 2-drop. Doesn't mop up 1/1's as well as a 1/3 would.
Hot Air Balloon - A 1/2 that grows seems potentially great. Aggro paladin will like this. Obviously better on the play than the draw, though.
Evasive Chimera - I like untargetables. I think this is also better than MC is giving it credit for. Still won't get run.
Grizzled Wizard - Gimmicky. This is just a raptor.
Bad Luck Albatross - Well-statted, which means this actually might be used in aggressive decks. I'd run it.
Blowtorch Saboteur - I thought this was a bad Saboteur, until I realized that the use doesn't have to be this turn. So you get a 3/4 "for free" in the sense that you use 3 mana to cost opponent 3 mana. Or simply lock out their hero power indefinitely. Certainly not squeezing it in until the late game, anyway.
Living Dragonbreath - pack filler.

4-5
Frizz Kindleroost - Definitely overrated.
Dragonmaw Poacher - Will dominate the day 1 meta and probably a long time to come. I'm honestly thinking of avoiding putting dragons in my early decks just to duck this guy.
Hoard Pillager - amazing for cards with a key weapon, like Ancharr.
Evasive Feywing - Good aggressive card, but it enables Dragonmaw Poacher.
Faceless Corruptor - Circumstantially really good. I still don't think it's Oasis Surger.
Kobold Stickyfinger - Potentially hilarious. Nice Aluneth ya got there, buddy.

6+
Utgarde Grapplesniper - definite meta-dependent card. If people avoid dragons because of poacher, then sure.
Evasive Wyrm - I actually think this is the worst of the evasive cards and that's with rush, divine shield, untargetable, and reasonable stats.
Gyrocopter - You may have convinced me that this is actually a really good card I need to keep an eye on.
Evasive Drakonid - definitely a good card. How do you deal with this besides maybe Deadly Shot?
Shu'ma - Looked like the worst legendary at first glance, and maybe it is, but the ability to flood a board cannot be underestimated. Quest hunter, token druid, any shaman with bloodlust...and it's hard to clear a 7-health minion AND remove a flood of weenies in the same turn. Any deck that runs this will have pushed opponents to spend their answers before turn 7.

Okay, so real talk...

Dragons are big, and they're good for late game, I guess, but they honestly don't seem super overbearing to the point that it outweighs the downside of getting hit with a Dragonmaw Poacher. I feel like those decks are also going to be super weak to aggro, except *maybe* Hunter or Warlock.

And, of course, aggro always defines the day 1 meta even as people are trying wacky shit. Pirate warrior has potential, not-dragon hunter can push damage, and mech paladin looks really dangerous as well. So here's my question: What's the best day 1 anti-aggro deck?

I feel like the best might be something like Tempo Rogue or Shaman which can control the board very well against other Aggro deck

I also think Control Warrior can do some damage still and has plenty of good stuff to deal with Aggro, even if Platebreaker is a card. Im also unsure if that card even fits into Aggro decks

Patient Assassin is a card that exists, and that's a 2 mana 1/1 with stealth and poisonous.

This just has "can't be targeted by spells or hero powers" (which, by the way doesn't stop the Rogue or druid hero power from killing it). It's really bad.

Yeah...I watched some streamers play in the pre-launch events. Dragonmaw Poacher is such a big deal. It's a lot better than the Kobolds and Catacombs card (Dragon Slayer; 3 mana 4/3 battlecry: deal 6 damage to a dragon). In addition to killing whatever drgon was in play, your opponent also gets a 4 mana 8/4.

Right, okay, but my point was that you'd have to give up minions to kill it because you can't just hit it with a kill spell, thus reducing your damage. Yes, there's battlecry targeting, and I have a feeling BGH may find a prominent place in the meta unless everyone just collectively decides not to run dragons or poachers, but I do like it a lot.

Fair point on the chimera, though. I'm kinda curious if a deck full of evasive minions would annoy opponents at all, though. Kinda like when you would play freeze mage and no minions would ever hit the board.

Spoke too soon, I opened Shu'ma in both Europe and Asia.

Also, opened Flik in both regions as well. Kind of strange I only opened two legendaries in both of those regions and they were the exact same two.

I opened Bandersmosh so I hate put him into my Galakrond deck and he's surprisingly been amazing so far.

Got me a Godfrey to clear the path to face and a new Maly for super cheat.

Also Kronk is stupid sick if you finish the quest after you transform. A pyroblast that also heals you for 10 for only 8 mana

Had 33 packs and only got the one guaranteed legendary after the maximum first 10 packs. Then I did the mission for the free one, opened it up, and got Golden Deathwing, Mad Aspect. Haven't decided whether to keep it or not yet, but it seems pretty good.

Warrior is low on board wipes. Brawl can backfire, Warpath isn't THAT strong, and Plague of Flames is conditional. Mad Aspect is the one final oomph control warrior often needs, because after the aforementioned cards it was possible to run out of removal value and have to rely on rush mechs and such.

And with Platebreaker around, warrior cannot ever get outvalued on removal. That card will look over warrior/druid's shoulder forever.

I usually open like a madman but this is completely absurd.

First off, my free gold legends were Flik and Mad Aspect. Off to a great start already. Then I start cracking, and I opened two different packs with two gold legends. Once right at the beginning (Nithogg and Mindflayer Kaahrj) and once after I opened one of every legend, so my second dual gold pack had Fizz Kindleroost and Mad Aspect in it.

So at this point I had 130 packs left and figured what the hell, I'll try to shoot my shot. Disenchanted Alexstrasza. Next pack, gold Alexstrasza.

So now I'm really feeling it, and went for Bandersmosh. Didn't open a gold of him, but I was opening the dude every 5-20 packs and got a TON of dust. Then with 5 packs left, I opened him again and didn't disenchant, because I couldn't guarantee opening another legend.

Next pack, boom, gold Murozond the Infinite. I also opened absurd numbers of gold cards in other rarities. So with the tens of thousands of dust I just got, I went and crafted an entire set of golden Galakronds because why not. I still have 24000 dust left over after doing it LOL

Playing Highlander Hunter, which is essentially the same deck as it was pre-expansion except with a couple dragons to replace the cards that went back to Wild, and I'm 8-1. Just got back to Rank 10. Seems good.

I also got my first Dragonqueen Alexstrasza off of a Dragonqueen Alexstrasza, which then led into a Malygos and Ysera. Also seems good.

Also had a game against an Aggro Druid where I was low on life and got a Nozari off of the Dragonqueen which led to an instant concede.

Just played a game where every dragon in my deck had +8/+8, but they all still cost the normal amount. The best part was it was against Control Warrior, so the game still took forever and I got to play almost all of my jumbo dragons.

Lightforged Paladin lacks any kind of silence and the removal options all require two cards. I like that idea for a mechanic, but right now its bad.

Calling it right now: Galakrond Shaman is going to be unfair to absolutely absurd levels. Shudderwock copying that battlecry and giving two MORE 8/8 rush minions, a free devastation, and all the other stuff youve done all game is so, so busted.

Have to wonder why they made Tyrande free. That was basically the only special hero I owned other than Liandrin. I actually did the stuff needed to earn those two, unlike all the other hot garbage that was mostly pre-order bonuses or direct payments, and it was a bit of a badge of pride that I had it.

Now everyone will have it. Oh well, it's not like anyone likes Anduin. He's an 8-year-old scrub being exploited by Onyxia.

I have most of the free ones: Lunara, Arthas, Tyrande, Maeiv and Morgl. I still haven't bothered playing Wow in order to get Liadrin.

I also have Medivh, and I legitimately don't remember where I got it from. I know for sure I didn't buy it so I imagine someone had to give it to me.

I decided instead of spending money on packs to spend money on heroes so I bought Magni and Medivh when they were on sale and just got Sylvanas, so now the only class without an alternate hero I have is Warlock.

I have most of the free ones except for Arthas I believe, the one you get for beating the Lich King, and Liadran as well.
