Just because I don't really have the time to dedicate to get as into it as I want to. Love the series and all but at this point in my life I'd rather spend my gaming time working through my giant backlog than learning and practicing a fighting game.

Somehow it's DMC5
I haven't bought many games at all lately, I think this is the only game I've bought this year. It wasn't horrible-bad, it just teased me with all the potential multiplayer then took that nowhere.
It's the only game I have that crashes hard frequently and I blame Denuvo for that so they're on the blacklist forever.

Had a big paragraph but it's a bunch of little things that bought it down. Didn't enjoy many of the weapons, not much about it stuck in my mind as cool or memorable, I appreciated the nostalgia ride at the time but now I suppose I'm down to just saying that.
I was eagerly following Bloodstained since they first announced it years ago and even though it's come out I haven't gotten it, I'm disappointingly confident that it'll be engaging for a week or two and then it'll be back to the drawing board.

Not sure I have many regretful recent purchases. I played through God of War (2018) over the summer and found it to be shallow and unremarkable, but I was expecting that going in and I played through it to see what people saw in it. I sold it right after I beat it anyway for the same price I paid for it.

Bloodstained is a weird one because I paid for it years ago and still haven't played it because the Switch version doesn't work.

I found Astral Chain to be underwhelming but still enjoyable, and I don't really regret it because I'll always be there for a Platinum game.

Maybe Red Dead Redemption 2? But only because I haven't played it yet.

The last real one was probably the FF15 DLC. I already knew I didn't like that game when I bought the season pass. I didn't have to do that to myself.

I've bought a lot of games that I ended up never playing or played very little of, so I regret all of those. I bought Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant and never got very far in the first one. Knowing they will probably never be remade brings me the most shame since I don't know if I'll ever pull out my PS2 again, so I guess I regret bringing that shame upon myself. I'm sure I'd greatly enjoy both.

If some of you guys are picking 15+ year old games as your most "recent" regretted purchase then every single game you've bought since then must have been a fucking masterpiece.
I did read the topic wrong, but honestly I don't have many VG purchases I regret. I don't buy a lot of games that I'm not sure I will enjoy. I can only really think of two other examples since then.

Anyway, to answer correctly, my most recent purchase regret is probably Stardew Valley. I love Harvest Moon, but that game got everything wrong. When you take out all the best parts of a farming sim you're just left with something horribly lame and boring.

How do you not enjoy Stardew Valley? I've played the hell out of that game because the gameplay is so good. I mean, yeah, the characters could be developed further than they were and that marriage and children weren't very lucrative, but it's fun to play even after 300 hours of it. I duly appreciate Digi for his Steam giveaways because that's where I snagged. Somebody thank him for me.

GK, you're the only person I've seen say it "got everything wrong." Most people think the opposite.

Speaking of Vesperia, that was the game for which I decided to buy a 360 instead of a PS3. I then proceeded to only play it for like an hour and bought a PS3 a few years later. I never bought any other 360 exclusives. So I guess the 360 would qualify for this topic!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which I bought just a few months ago. Not because it's bad, but because I could have spent that money on a game I would actually enjoy. I know it's well received and many people find it fun and relaxing, but I just could not get the point at all, not my kind of game. At least it wasn't too expensive.

Before that, probably Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which pains me to say because I absolutely love the first XC. This one mostly because I did buy it full-priced and just could not care for it enough to justify that (and I found it slow), but I still want to give it a good try at some point...probably.

Mass Effect 2

Nothing against the game I just bought it near release, didn't feel like playing it immediately, and by the time I did it'd been so far from when I played ME1 I kinda wanted to play ME1 again to refresh myself, but at the same time I haven't really wanted to replay ME1

So basically wasted $50. It was that purchase that made me really dial back my game purchases and only get stuff I had immediate plans of playing.

And I'm sure it's a great game and I'll play it eventually and love it but by that time I could have got it for $5 ya know?

dark souls 3, although it's kinda my own fault.

I almost never buy games when they are released and usually wait for the price to drop and/or to make sure that I'm able to do research on whether the game is something I'd like or not. considering the souls games have a pretty good track record for me, and I was coming off the very high experience of Bloodborne becoming my favorite game of all time, this was the first game in a really, really long time that I bought day 1.

it's not my fault that the game fucking sucks but it's my fault for letting myself get duped into buying something just because it has some specific words written on the box. going against my own policy one time and it turned out to be a huge mistake, but at least I learned my lesson. have been a lot more strict about waiting on games since then, and haven't felt disappointed with another purchase since.

Dark Souls 3 is great. You're nuts

eh. I like it a little bit more than when I first bought it, but I would definitely never call it great. the first half of the game is piss easy, and the level design is passable at best. this is actually the part of the game that is the most fun. you can actually enjoy yourself a little bit if you come up with some kind of unique build or strategy that you want to rely on, and force yourself to survive using that. the levels are still not fun to explore, at all, but the game mechanics are good enough that you can enjoy this.

the back half of the game is a complete travesty. poorly designed levels and a complete escalation of every single encounter in the game. it basically tries to force you to use the optimal strategy of rolling around everything in light armor with a straight sword, and restricts your ability to use those alternate builds that you could have potentially had fun with in the first half of the game.

every single time I've done a playthrough of dark souls 3 I usually start off using one specific type of build or idea (I'm going to use magic, I'm going to wear heavy armor and tank everything). this strategy usually works up until about you get to pontiff sullyvahn, then, after that, I always end up just switching to either a short sword or a long sword for the rest of the game after some point when I hit a wall.

here are some of my quotes about Grand Archives from my third or fourth run of the game, about 8 months ago:

"did miyazaki start drinking or something? did a completely different team design this part of the game? this is absolutely a low point for dark souls 3 and probably the franchise as a whole."

"the very first thing you come across is a locked door with the KEY SITTING RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT. this should be throwing up massive red flags that the people who designed this level have no fucking clue what the word 'exploration' or the phrase 'dungeon crawler' means."

"thankfully they made one good decision when designing this level; they put it near the end of the game. that way the fewest people possible would ever see it. and besides that, by the time you finish navigating this mess, it's very unlikely you'll want to continue playing dark souls 3 for much longer."

I stand by every single one of these statements. I'm not gonna copy and paste my entire review into this topic but I was just reading through it again and I agree with pretty much everything I thought back then, and I've played the game two more times since.

Actually, now that I've thought about it, I might have a more recent answer: Street Fighter V.

I loved Street Fighter IV (and all its updated versions) to death and I'm a huge SF fan in general, so I was all in on this one. Yet I haven't touched it since they released the story mode DLC, which was about three months after release. It just wasn't able to hold my interest at all, and I honestly think it was the lack of worthwhile single player content. I don't play online a ton (Street Fighter IV was the big exception to this, but that just speaks to how good it was), so I wanted something substantial I could play on my own.

Have they added something like that in the last three years? Maybe. Will I ever boot up the game again and find out? Nope.
