I know there was an article I saw ranking the DQ games the other day and I'm pretty sure there have been a couple other places too. If I recall I don't think they said it was bad per se, just kind of basic. length wise, it's probably something like
Golden Sun (well only counting part 1) < Radiant Historia < Symphonia < Disgaea < everything else is probably a minimum of 50+ hours (though I haven't played octopath or xenoblade 2) I'd say start with Radiant Historia. --- The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons. Disgaea if you want something chill and grindy. Radiant Historia if you want something more plot-focused.
also I antivote FFXII. it's got cool plot ideas/setup but there's little follow-through and the gameplay is not good enough to carry --- another place and time, without a great divide, and we could be flying deadly high ... Copied to Clipboard!

DQ 8 is far and away the best game on the list. My personal vote goes to Octopath, because I'm destined to defend that game until I die.
Disgaea is whatever. Never played Golden Sun. Radiant Historia, Symphonia, and the Xenoblade games deserve antivotes. Monster Hunter World is probably the most overrated game in recent memory. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I heard it was a good game so I was so excited when I finally found a copy (this wasn't that long after it came out) It didn't live up to its hype. I voted Xenoblade 2, easily the best game on here. 2nd choice is FF12. The rest are decent. Haven't played Monster hunter or Radiant historia. I loved 8 for its story and the monster arena side quest was really enjoyable. Maybe my favorite side quest in any game ever.
Dragon Quest XI is a very long game, but it's story is somehow even better than 8's was. Especially the second act. If you are a lover of rpgs, DQVIII and DQXI are must plays. Why are these games so enjoyable? I think in part, it's the twists and turns the stories take you on. You could say that about almost any good rpg, but somehow these are just more memorable and immersive. Also, I'm a fan of more basic combat systems, and while these have a lot of variations, its nothing overly complicated. --- Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The safest bets are V, VIII, and XI. If you don't like barebones RPGs you may not like I or II (II may also be frustrating if you dislike grinding). VII (and to a lesser extent VI) are a bit divisive. Personally I love them, but some people find the slow pacing in VII to be frustrating (the fliipside of that is that VII builds up a world in a way I haven't seen any other game attempt, and if that hits for you it's fantastic). --- Congrats to Advokaiser for winning the CBX Guru Challenge! ... Im playing through DQ4 right now and having a blast. 7 and 8 are pretty good too from what Ive played. The Dragon Quest Monsters series is great too, particularly the Joker games. Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'll definitely take a look into adding IV, V, VII and XI once I clear more games out. I'll likely be starting VIII tonight and will probably keep 2nd-4th place in mind once I beat it.
