At the end of the empire strikes back, there were multiple plot threads the audience wanted to see resolved before they even saw the first advertisement for Return of the Jedi. They wanted to see Han rescued, Luke to come to terms with his lineage, and the Empire to fall via the removal of Darth Vader and the Emperor, among others. As of the end of The Last Jedi, what does the audience want? We've just been told that the war will literally never end, and that the purpose of the war is to sell toys. The emperor/main villain equivalent has already been killed off. If the new empire/first order was going to ever go away, it would already be in motion. If I were interested in just hooking up to an IV drip of star wars sounds and visual effects, sure, story doesn't matter. Go on with eternal shooting with no progress. But I personally am looking for something more if I'm going to throw some time and money at something. The entire pitch for episode 9 is "hey, we don't care about anything that's happening, but it looks like star wars". ESPECIALLY considering that TFA, while a decent movie, really doesn't work well now that TLJ didn't really build off of it. It's like, I feel like I have no idea what the general plot/driving force is supposed to be. I barely understand what the First Order evens wants, and I never really had a clear picture of the universe itself after ROTJ. Not saying he would have made a great movie but he had a vision apparently. There are of course other factors. It's a shame because all the main character individually I agree with this, but I think this is because the new trilogies are taking so much from the OT, which did the same thing. And I can understand being disappointed on that front, but I'd argue the worldbuilding in the movies has always been pretty bad! It was easier to accept the Emperor and building a Death Star since we had no knowledge of the world. But in this new trilogy, we had things left as they were after RotJ so I think worldbuilding matters more now. TFA is ok, but its basically just an inferior ANH in a lot of ways. TLJ is terrible and easily the worst of the movies to me though and thats including the spinoff movies.
