I have had a company run a background check on me and where I'd worked in the past. Generally the bigger the company or the more sensitive the position (like working with kids or money), the more likely they're going to dig through your past.

I think the other thing they often asked me was for my 'rating' since my firm is well known for having a globally standardised performance evaluation system and that impacted both when I applied for internal role changes (although HR would've given them this detail anyway) as well as when considering external options through a recruiter.
