I take probably 15-20 card payments over the phone at my job, and our system requires distinguishing between credit or debit. Probably about 30% of the time, the person will tell me it's a credit card when it is, in fact, a debit card, which causes an error message and then I need to reprocess it.

It's not a big deal, it's just a little ridiculous how commonly people get this wrong, especially when I try to make it as implicitly clear that there is a distinction between the two when I ask for their info.

Probably because most places that ask for credit card info just as easily take debit card info.

This. It doesn't matter what you pick most of the time if you're paying in a store.

Them writing "Visa" on both my debit card and my credit card definitely doesn't help.

What did they expect to happen?

Keep your "subsistence" account separate, and it's no problem.

You can do that with a credit card while also getting rewards for your purchases.

Also if it gets used fraudulently you're not out your actual money while you dispute the charges.

Arguably less, as a zip code is much easier to guess than a PIN.
