It's available on some modern platforms, you still have a chance. It's very worth it and unlike a lot of PSX games it was mostly sprites and doesn't look like crap. The modernized localization lacks the WTF of the PSX version but I guess some people didn't think it was as charming as I did.

Everything is slow in 9. Even the story moves slowly because of all the BS you have to do like going to another group of people to hear them talk with that. . .feature

The original square team made games 1-10. There is a clear progression of quality among those titles (besides a couple black sheep such as 2, 8) After the merging with the enix, the series has not really been well-regarded until very recently

FF1 was the first
FF4 was the first real FF that had a story
FF5 was the first FF with good combat mechanics
FF6 had a decent story, but suffered issues issues with pacing and combat difficulty
FF7 was the first 3d title and had an epic story along with a soundtrack supported by playstation
FF9 was the culmination of many gameplay mechanics and sports a great story. the combat is flawed, however, and certain spells such as regen ruin the game and the combat is too slow + there are too many encounters
FF10 was the magnum opus of the original square. Suffers from lack of exploration, but has the most fleshed out story as well as characters. All titles past this game lack a spark that the series hasnt seen since
FF14 current expansion has amazing storytelling. There is some life here, and suggests FF7 remake may actually the the first good game in nearly 20 years
