Rocky IV

This one was not good. It had some good moments (the training scene was peobably the best in the series so far) but it was pretty much the story of III again, except without a point, and they screwed up Adrian again, though in fairness not as badly as II. Plus, extra training or not, Rocky had no business whatsoever beating Drago after he KO'd and freaking killed Apollo in the second dang round, when the story even freaking begins with the question of who is better intentionally unresolved AND Drago is empiraclly shown to have gotten stronger since then.

Also, f***ing Paulie.

Eh.

It was an interesting idea but really didn't work at all. Dialog was bad, acting was bad, movie was bad. Paulie actually pleasantly surprised me. He showed his first development since I. And sure, it wasn't much but at least for once he isn't the same dang character at the end as he was at the beginning. But we're talking like 30 seconds of the film here.

Also, it's kind of surreal to watch a movie that was largely a rehash of Rocky II, when Rocky II was already a total rehash of Rocky I, lol.

solid film, i really enjoyed it. and now i get all the jokes and references about mrs robinson. but i hated the ending

the protagonist is a fucking sociopathic creep who eventually gets the girl by stalking the shit out of her. after having an affair with her mother

Rocky 2 and 3 are good. A lot of people love 4 though I think its just okay. 5 is universally hated. I liked Creed 2

I'm among the group whose favorite is Rocky IV, mainly because of how over the top ridiculous it is. Definitely recommend giving 2-4 a watch.

I've been watching films by Mamoru Oshii, particularly his Kerberos Panzer Cop series. The guy is just brilliant at mixing elements of tech-noir with offbeat surrealist humor. A lot of folks wouldn't care for the pacing but I love slow as fuck movies.

I gotta start watching more anime movies (Angel's Egg is near the top, priority-wise!). Only ones I've seen from start to finish were My Neighbor Totoro, Paprika, Pokmon: The First Movie and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light. Also ordered Akira on eBay last month but the seller never shipped it out.

I also watched half of Perfect Dark the summer of last year, but that experience was kind of a disaster; I'd bought the DVD since they've still yet to release it in Blu Ray in America, and I originally started to watch the dub but then decided a minute or two in that I'd better watch the original with subtitles instead. I went to the main menu & changed the settings, and the first thing I noticed was how god damned ugly the subtitles were - big, blocky yellow letters with a crude, thick and equally blocky black outline; it was like the bottom of the screen was a construction site. Because of this I ended up oscillating between the two versions probably a dozen times (maybe even more). Eventually I settled on the subbed version, only for the movie to fucking FREEZE at the elevator scene; it was at this point I gave up, but the DVD back in its disc & decided to wait for it to come out on Blu Ray.

I still need to see Angel's Egg. I might try to get to it tonight.

The ugly subtitle thing is a problem I've had to grit my teeth and bear quite a few times, especially with rarer films. I'd be a videophile if I could afford to, but dammit, there are movies that are only available in shitty formats and I'll take what I can get.

I might post some working my way back through my recent watches.

Movie 337: Hustlers - 6.5/10. The movie where strip clubs, the financial crisis, and drugging and robbing people all meet. It started off strong but the actual story started it kind of got repetitive very quickly. But dat J.Lo stripping scene...

Movie 336: It Chapter Two - 6.5/10. It seems like everyone else loves the comedy and dislikes the scares in this. I am the opposite. I pretty much didn't laugh at any of the jokes and hated how often the attempts at humor ruined the mood. Genuinely liked the scary aspects.
