This was inspired by @ninjarobot_22 s topic about Batman TAS. While I have seen the animated series, Ive never actually given Beyond a proper watch. Im familiar with what it is, but Ive never watched it save for a couple of episodes I caught as a kid. Ive got the complete series set and Im giving it a go. Ill post my thoughts on the first episode once Im done with it.

Rebirth Part One

So we start off with Batman rescuing a girl from some kidnappers, but hes definitely past his prime. He has a heart attack mid fight and is forced to pull a gun on one of the thugs. Terrified by his actions, he hangs up the suit.

I really like Terry as character so far. You can tell hes gonna be a more smartass version of Batman, but he still has a good heart and since of justice. Also, how did this line get past the censors?

My moneys on Nelson.

I wouldnt be so sure.

Yeah, but you have wrestled with him.

Man, its amazing what things they could slip under the radar in these shows.

I really liked the meeting of Terry and Bruce. Bruce reminded me of Mr. Miyagi with the way he came to Terrys aid.

Were the Jokers!

Sure you are.

These guys dont even know that Bruce has fought THE Joker.

And I guess it wouldnt be a superhero story without a dead parent. It looks like Bruce is willing to help.

Overall it was a good intro to the series.

Nice. I remember loving Batman Beyond, but I can't remember any of the episodes at all. I'll check here to see which episodes you liked, so that I could skip the bad ones.

I'm tagging.

One thing I remember the most about this is Terry is fucking TERRIBLE at secret identities.

"Oh dear, trouble! I better world-class gymnast awaaaaaaaay-"

"WE'RE SAVED GUYS IT'S BATMAN"

Also he's voiced by Eric Matthews and it's great.

Rebirth Part Two

Man I love this version of the batsuit. Not only does it look cool, but it can fly and even has jet boosters. Thats badass.

It was kind of a dick move for Bruce to let Terry get the shit kicked out him. I get that he was mad, but at least wait until hes safe before turning off the suit.

Powers gets a taste of his own medicine, literally, and has turned into some kind of nuclear man. I get the vibe that hes gonna be Terrys arch nemesis.

Bruce comes by Terrys house and offers him the Stark interns- I mean a new job. And with that handshake, a new Dark Knight is born.

It was a fun conclusion to Terrys origin. Now that Terry is officially Batman, Im eager to see where it goes from here.

That's kinda Batman's thing, dude, he's a dick has been part of his character eons and as a result has given him a shitload of problems even today most of his more famous stories are about one of his allies turning against him because of how much of a dick he is rather than a slug out with one of his arch enemies.

Still, I remember Batman Beyond just because it was the first cartoon to air at night on a weekday on the then WB before they added What's New Scooby Do? the show that kicked off the full revival of their franchise into modern day adaptions and the complete death of any of scooby's past villains, allies and cameos, their most recent crossover was with fucking Supernatural of all things and it was surprisingly not bad, aside from the 40 year old trying to fuck a 17 year old and the 17 year old trying to fuck a 40 year old

As a kid I hated it because it wasn't "real Batman," but knowing more about how comics generally work (with spin-offs, alternate timelines/realities, etc.) it's actually pretty damn cool.

Show was overlooked on the perception of it being an edgy spinoff, but it really does hold up as a legacy and on its own merit.

One of the major strengths, something it can claim even over the original was just how it used the major scifi elements. Bruce dealt with a lot of mad science, but most of the trippy stuff was directed at him, and otherwise used to the effect of a classic monster story. In Terry's world, it's not just The Batman having to deal with what new technology enables; it's available for everyone, to wreak havoc on themselves and others, often without even intending to.

It might have better effect nowadays, zeerust notwithstanding. CRISPR, VR, steroids, they're all the prototypes, and Bats has to deal with the final product, hot off the black market.

Great series.

Weak villains though.

TC, when you finish, you should watch the Justice League: Unlimited episode "Epilogue." It's easily considered the series finale of Batman Beyond.

Black Out

Another solid episode. Terry goes up against Inque, a villain whose body seems to be composed of... goop that lets her shapeshift.

Powers is competing with some other company for a big contracting deal, so its up to Batman to protect the rival company from Powers sabotage.

I do really like the banter between Bruce and Terry while Terry is Batmanning it up. I hope thats a constant through the series. Also Terry gets his own Batwing and thats awesome, though I guess its technically the Batmobile since cars fly now. Terry even refers to it as the car so maybe it is meant to be the Batmobile.

The episode culminates in a battle between Batman and Inque in the Batcave. Bruce quickly sneaks away to put on a hat and some glasses.

What took you so long?

Sudden case of shyness.

Terry wins by using what I assume is Mr. Freezes freeze ray, causing Inque to shatter into multiple pieces. We then get our first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Batman drops off Inques... pieces.

Overall a fun episode.

Bruce quickly sneaks away to put on a hat and some glasses.

That hat and those glasses have kind of a history. In the DCAU, that outfit belonged to the Gray Ghost, a superhero-esque TV show that Bruce loved as a kid. He and the actor who played the Ghost team up to stop a bomber who's mimicking the plot of one of the episodes. The actor is shocked to find that the Batcave is extremely similar to the Gray Ghost Lair and Batman reveals that there's a corner of the cave which is just a shrine to the show. After the bombings revitalize interest in the show and rescue the actor's dying career, Bruce Wayne shows up to a signing and subtly reveals his identity to the actor.

That actor was played by Adam West.

I watched a bit of it back when I was a kid, but I remembered very little. I just finished watching all of it a week ago. It's overall very good, but there are a couple of issues I have with it. Most of them have to do with the series simply ending too early.

What I loved about that BTAS episode was also what I loved about Nolan's TDKR - Batman being a source of hope/inspiration, usually more Superman's domain
