Jeffrey Epstein, the financier indicted on sex trafficking charges last month, committed suicide at a Manhattan jail, officials said on Saturday.

Mr. Epstein hanged himself and his body was found this morning at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan at roughly 7:30.

Manhattan federal prosecutors last month charged Mr. Epstein, 66, with sex trafficking of girls as young as 14, and details of his behavior have been emerging for years.

Mr. Epstein, a financier with opulent homes, a private jet and access to elite circles, had been dogged for decades by accusations that he had paid dozens of girls for sexual acts in Florida.

He previously avoided federal criminal charges in 2008 after prosecutors brokered a widely criticized deal that allowed him to plea to solicitation of prostitution from a minor and serve 13 months in jail.

Last month, a week after being denied bail, Mr. Epstein was found unconscious in his cell at the jail in Manhattan with marks on his neck, and prison officials were investigating the incident as a possible suicide attempt.

It was not immediately clear on Saturday whether the authorities had put in additional safeguards to watch him after the incident last month.

Martin Weinberg, Mr. Epsteins defense lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A cache of previously sealed legal documents, released on Friday by a federal appeals court, provided new, disturbing details about what was going on inside Mr. Epsteins homes and how his associates recruited young women and girls, including from a Florida high school.

The documents among the most expansive sets of materials publicly disclosed in the 13 years since Mr. Epstein was first charged with sex crimes include depositions, police incident reports, photographs, receipts, flight logs and even a memoir written by a woman who says she was a sex-trafficking victim of Mr. Epstein and his acquaintances.

The documents were filed as part of a defamation lawsuit in federal court that Virginia Giuffre brought in 2015 against Ghislaine Maxwell, Mr. Epsteins longtime companion and confidant. Ms. Giuffre and Ms. Maxwell settled the lawsuit shortly before the trial was to begin in 2017.

The Miami Herald and other media outlets petitioned the court to have the lawsuit documents unsealed. The request was initially denied, but an appeals court ordered them released last month, just days before Mr. Epstein was arrested on sex-trafficking charges. He had pleaded not guilty.

I have a feeling that there's going to be an investigation into how Epstein managed to kill himself and steps taken to correct the problem so that it doesn't happen again. That being said, the names of all of Epstein's enablers will become public despite his death; that includes #45 who'd better hope that his blindly obedient followers don't turn on him.

I know given his crimes a lot of people are just going to shrug their shoulders or even cheer the news, but it's still unfortunate. If he was being attacked and threatened by other prisoners and felt this was his only escape, it borders on cruel and unusual punishment, before he was even actually found guilty in court.

Even worse though....is that now we'll never get testimony from him on all the rich and powerful people connected to him who may have used his "services," and those people will likely escape justice now.

This is not good news at all.

I'm bad at logic because of bad level design, and I don't treat conjecture as truth? Okay. Occam's razor. The simplest explanation was he killed himself. I don't like Trump either but not everything is a conspiracy. Deal with it.

It's totally believable that he actually did kill himself.

The thing is...was he intentionally put in a situation (thrown into general pop. w/ a bunch of inmates who'd make his life hell, with the guards ignoring his pleas for help and conveniently leaving him with the needed implements and a lack of direct monitoring for long stretches of time) to "encourage" him to kill himself?

A lot of powerful people definitely would have preferred to not have him under oath revealing things....

I actually think both theories make sense.

I feel like he could have killed himself, but it seems awfully convenient he dies just as names were coming out.

I don't think I've ever seen something that's so obviously a cover up. Someone had him murdered. This is extremely terrifying.

Update on the Times article:

Mr. Epstein was housed in a special unit with extra security, but he was not under suicide watch, according to a prison official.

The authorities could not immediately explain why they had not put additional safeguards in place after the earlier incident. The F.B.I. said it was investigating, and Attorney General William P. Barr said in a statement that a special inquiry would be opened into what happened.

I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody, Mr. Barr said. Mr. Epsteins death raises serious questions that must be answered. In addition to the FBIs investigation, I have consulted with the Inspector General who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epsteins death.

This is not good news at all.

The news about him being in a secure unit with additional security suggests he didn't have much interaction with other prisoners. And frankly, the public ire and knowledge that he'd almost certainly spend the rest of his life behind bars would be a significant incentive anyway for a guy used to living the high life.

Honestly, I would be more likely to suspect a conspiracy if not for that failed first attempt. The guy is linked to a lot of powerful, prominent people.

He had been taken off suicide watch on July 29. He was only on it for about a week.

Okay this is weird, the article here and how people speak of him, accuses him of sex trafficking, news I can find in Dutch only mentions sexual abuse and possession of child pornography. That almost makes it sound like a cover-up...

when you look at the actual court case filings though, there are far, FAR more instances of sex crimes against minors committed by politicians on the right
