24 y/o Connor Betts from Bellbrook, Ohio was the suspect named in the deadly shooting at Ned Peppers Bar as he was seen wearing BODY ARMOUR and used a long gun to kill 9 people and injured 27 on early Sunda morning in less than a MINUTE!!

It happened at the Oregon District at 1am as officers were already nearby and were able to put an end it to quickly

Dayton Mayor, Nan Whaley said police responded so quickly that hundreds of people could have been dead today

He carried a .223 caliber rifle and additiional high capacity magazines as he opened fire from the street

According to his linkedln, he attended Sinclair Community College where he studied psychology and worked at a Chipotle

This is the 2nd mass shooting in the US than less tha 24 hours

The employees at the bar were all safe and gave their condolensces to the families of the victims

President Trump tweeted yet again "God bless the people of El Paso, Texas. God Bless the people of Dayton, Ohio"

Democratic Senator, Sherrod Brown said "thoughts and prayers are not enough" and said he was angry that state and national lawmakers won't pass gun safety laws

23 y/o Nikita Papillon said she saw a girl she talked to earlier lying outside the bar and mentioned she liked her outfit and thought it was cute as she said the same to her. It was terrifying to her that something like this could happen where people go to Ned's for something you don't have to worry about someone shooting up the place

Governor Mike DeWine issued a statement to order the flags half mast and offered assistance to Whaley

The gunman wore a bulletproof vest and earmuffs as witnesses said he came up with an AR-15 and just started firing at random.

The motive for these murders are not known as police are searching his house

This comes as El Paso, Texas is already reeling from the deaths of 20 people after a white supremacist randomly shot at customers at a Walmart. 21 y/o Patrick Crusius wrote a manifesto on his extreme hate for "race mixing" and the "invasion of Hispanics" which was the reason for his mass murder

Do you feel safe in America with current gun laws?

Depending on how you define "mass". If you use the fbi definition, following the trend, probably around next month.

Explain to me then, why Switzerland, which makes firearm ownership mandatory for every household, isn't in a perpetual state of civil war?

Hell, explain to me why Kennesaw, Georgia, which has the same firearm law as Switzerland, didn't have a murder since 1989?

In all fairness, I believe Switzerland mandates firearm ownership for every household after they have completed a period of military training.

We do need a definite culture that every citizen can be welcomed, however the far left and far right has failed in doing this because they are extremely exclusionary and identitarian, this one culture cannot be defined by anything other than being a legal citizen of the United States.

That was one of the reasons why Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold massacred 13 people 20 years ago. Besides bullying, they wanted a name for themselves, and committed suicide to avoid a prison sentence or capital punishment.

At least in the Soviet Union, those who were a public figure and who outlived their usefulness to the state, had photographs of them airbrushed out, and sent to gulags where they were never heard from again.

Personally, I think there's merit in referring to past and future mass shooters only by identification numbers. No faces, no names, no published body counts, no comparison to prior shootings... Just "an individual henceforth referred to as Mass Shooter #16925 committed a mass killing today. Victims' families have been notified, and the individual is expected to stand trial on August 22nd, facing a life sentence." None of this "This guy named John Doe committed the third-worst mass shooting since December!" reporting that gives them so much attention and validation.

I'd probably feel safer without "gun-free zones" (which do nothing to deter wrongdoers while disarming law-abiding citizens) and some of the current regulation, but I feel safe regardless. Granted, I don't like in a city where gun violence is a constant problem so I'm far less likely to be exposed to it.

Otherwise I'm in favor of universal background checks.

Theres more guns than people in the US

A scare tactic that isn't a particularly meaningful statistic, considering that gun collectors and the US military are a thing. The total number of guns by itself isn't a great indication of the availability of guns. Many of the nations with the highest rate of gun violence have substantially fewer guns than people. Out of the top 5 nations for gun homicides, 3-4 have fewer than 10 guns per 100 people. In terms of gun ownership, some of the nations with the most guns-per-people rank near the bottom of the list, including Iceland and Norway which each have more than 30 guns-per-person

afaik, the US is the only nation in the world with more guns than people but the US is a military manufacturer.

Mead posted...

If weapons refers just to guns, they are regulated. For starters, the National Firearms Act and the Federal Firearms Act have been around since the 1930s. Since then, you've had other federal legislation as well (including laws regulating gun materials so manufacturers can't make guns that can pass through a metal detector). That's not counting regulation at the state level.

Unless you're talking about hobbyists who build guns on their own? Because just about anybody with a little know-how can construct a gun. Those usually aren't the ones used in illegal activities. If you're talking about 3D printed guns, that's something that needs some kind of regulation and, at the moment, there's

While I don't like mass shooters getting famous for their crimes and feel that certain information should be suppressed to discourage copycats, the public kinda needs to know location, body count, motive, etc. Otherwise I agree that their identity shouldn't be publicized (their name & face don't really add anything to the conversation -- especially since most people refer to the shooter by the incident anyway) and we shouldn't be giving free publicity to their manifestos, which is exactly the kind of attention most of them want.
