You're talking about FFX?

IIRC you don't need to do the quest for Tidus' weapon to get the Celestial Mirror or whatever it was. I rarely ever bothered and just got the ones I needed unless I was trying for 100% or something like that.

While we're on the topic of Final Fantasy, is there any way to turn off this painfully slow attack bar in FFIV? I feel like I'm sitting here for over a minute just watching the bar fill up because I can't do anything else.
