A buddy of mine moved to Dallas a year ago, and while he's really enjoyed it, he says it's gotten a lot more expensive in the past 1-2 years.

Depends on the suburb. Frisco, for example, always is rising in terms of CoL. I live in Lewisville but do all of my shopping in FloMo and it's great.

The US-75 corridor (Richardson/Plano/Allen/McKinney) has been stable too from what I've seen. Granted, haven't paid much attention to housing prices specifically except for the fact that my rent has gone up a total of 30 bucks in two years.

I dunno why you'd want to move away from Florida besides the hurricane season or to get away from certain people. I know someone that's always complaining about moving away from Florida.

I don't recommend moving to anywhere with long or cold winters they suck.

Also, perhaps ironically, louisville and lexington are the places where the lowest percentage of people care about ncaa basketball. In rural places it's basically church for the entire county.

That's pretty stable. I had an increase in 50 over the same time period, but part of that was because my first year of rent was discounted. Overall, I'm pretty happy out here. I know a lot of people who live in Denton, but I don't know how stable prices there are.

Madison does not have good food from what I hear, which should automatically knock it out of contention.

This is one of the most objectively wrong things I've ever heard.

Madison has GREAT restaurants. Also has good public transit and enough things to do to keep you occupied.

No good Chinese or Japanese food, no Italian to speak of. Not sure how you define "greatness" in a restaurant, but it's certainly lacking in culinary diversity.

1. Great restaurants. Anyone who has been here can vouch for how good the food is. Burgers, fish fry, pizza, all kinds of ethnic food... and almost all of it is good. The restaurant scene here is always lively and you'll definitely enjoy it. Just ignore SephyG - he hasn't even been here, so how the hell can he base it on something he 'heard" from an idiot?

The idiot I know who moved there has family in the restaurant business in New York and Taiwan, so I don't take her opinion mildly.

I am a little jaded though, as I would describe the food scene in most mid-sized US cities as garbage.

Well I can't sell you on St. Louis cuz it sucks, but at least it's a cheap area to live. I could instead sell you on Seattle, which is where I would prefer to move, that's where my sister currently is. I've only visited once so far, but it's such a beautiful city and the weather is almost always perfect if you like clouds, and it rarely gets too hot.

You very clearly have never been here. Your friend clearly knows nothing and is just thinking every place should be New York. That's laughable.

Lincoln Nebraska is actually quite nice. Just avoid downtown on football Saturdays. (We also got Scott Frost now, which I decided is the couple name of Emma Frost and Scott Summers. LOL)

We have an arena. My husband is a software developer and makes pretty good money.

It might be cold for someone used to Florida weather though. The summers have been nice though.

So true. Sephy's friend needs to learn reality. She clearly doesn't live in it.

Good Chinese places include Imperial Garden and Ichiban Sichuan. Good Japanese places include Takara, Muramoto, and Tavernakaya (Wisco-Japanese fusion, but still good). Italian places include Cento (expensive AF, though), Naples 15 and, Benvenuto's. There is EXCELLENT culinary diversity here - just as much as New York. I know of a good Indonesia place, a good Afghani place, a good Brazilian place.........

I dunno about diversity, but when I was up in Madison earlier this year visiting family, we went to two Chinese restaurants and both were great.

Granted, one was this dingy little strip mall place that you probably wouldn't look twice at unless someone familiar with the area pointed you there. Really good food.

I will agree that we don't have great Italian food. I moved here from Buffalo NY which has a high Italian immigrant population and I got spoiled by really good Italian food.

Anywhere I've gone here for Italian is okay at best, although I've never tried Cento or Naples 15.

Benvenuto's is terrible.

You live near there so yeah, you'd probably know better. I've heard mixed things about the place, which is probably why it came to mind. I don't get out to the North Side very often. So you can scratch that off the list. Cento is an expensive date night place. Owned by Food Fight, so you know it's good. Also Eno Vino works. That's a new place that I haven't gotten to yet because of crowds and a lack of funding.

I can say that our Italian selection pales in comparison to Chicago or anywhere in New York state. But it doesn't mean we don't HAVE it.

Hmmm... I might have heard of that place from my sister? I don't recall. I might have to look into that, thanks.

For places near me, I tried Novanta recently, but that's mostly a pizza place, one that tries to be authentically Italian. It was pretty good. But it's not like... a broad Italian place. Naples 15 similarly focuses on pizza but they have other things, too.

If you think you'd like to travel and you also like to drive, central Kentucky is within a day's drive of most of the eastern half of the US. You can cover most anywhere you'd want to go in about a 16 state area or something.

Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, D.C., Baltimore, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Asheville, Raleigh, Charleston, Savannah, Atlanta, Nashville, St. Louis, etc. are all <= 10 hours. Most are < 8.

I think I read a quip somewhere that the radius includes like 2/3 of the U.S. population, which is attractive for certain business.

Just think of all the road trips!

Also, four seasons per year with practically no extremes or natural disasters, and uh, very unlikely to get blown up should things go bad I suppose?

We also have the highest % of total area covered by moving water of the 48 contiguous states (Alaska is #1). We're totally set for the impending water crisis.

Alright I think that's probably all I got.

Berkeley is pretty neat. SF and Oakland are both accessible, and you don't have you deal with the high cost of living and other unpleasantness that comes with actually living in SF.

The cost of living is still higher than average, but it's not to the exorbitant levels found in SF.

Also the food's pretty decent and there's so much fresh produce around.

Sure!

So cheap is good because I am not sure how to translate my former job to a career in the short term because of the methods used there being out dated. So I don't imagine any new job I take is going to be great money wise.

Food isn't important to me and Sarasota hs s an amazing food scene so I will just cry regardless of where I move.

I have a car so public transport isn't a bother and neither is commuting. I love to drive and have people I phone from around the world for long drives and it is almost leisure time.

Cold winters would be new to me of note.

Nerd scene would be cool as one of my major complaints on my city is its kind of hard to meet people. A younger city (hard to be older) is really preferred.

I spent this Christmas with in-laws in Tacoma. The Seattle/Tacoma area is the only place I've seen in the country with natural beauty that might rival Hawaii. It's also bound to have a young/hip/nerd culture - not as much as Seattle itself, but it's the neighboring city so you wouldn't be far from all the big city stuff. Pretty sure Tacoma is a lot more affordable than Seattle, too.
