I don't really get the whole MAME thing, since they have scores on there that are listed as MAME.

But yeah, the one with the board switch is faked video.

Is it really that bad if the score is on an emulator or whatever MAME is?

It means they're no longer sure if it was a single session. He could've been able to save state to get better scores or even tool-assist it.

The evidence that he lied is pretty good, but there are some minor quibbles about his behavior that I found noticeable:

1. Apparently he has NEVER been seen getting over 1 million points live. There've been people who have said they've seen him do it, and he's claimed to have done it in front of crowds, but it's never been proven to actually been seen by the general public. I especially like this video where he is about to set a record in public and someone "accidentally" unplugs the machine:

2. All of Billy's 1 million+ score videos are direct feeds, which is odd enough, but the process of setting up a direct feed on a DK arcade machine is extremely complicated (http://donkeykongforum.com/index.php?topic=1413.0) to the point that it's possible only one person has actually done it. Billy has said before he doesn't know much about the hardware, but he supposedly does this when playing on machines set at conventions and stuff? If someone else is doing it for him, then they've never been mentioned or have spoken up.

3. Donkey Kong on MAME apparently has minor, but noticeable, audio inconsistencies compared to the real version. And for "some" reason Billy's direct feed footage of his records completely lack sound...

Like, it's one thing to have smoking guns that heavily stack against him, but these points alone should make him extremely suspect. Just like with Todd Rogers I'm astonished how anyone could get away with stuff like this and still be considered credible, even if you couldn't prove them wrong.

I think this kinda stuff is cool actually. not that he cheated, but that as our understanding and knowledge of technology increases we can figure out that he cheated. even if it happened a long time ago. eventually people find out. that's really cool.

With respect to the video, if he was "setting a record" in a public place, and it was unplugged right before he set it, what does this prove? (I am genuinely asking... this video is only 2 minutes long, and doesn't provide much context)

I knew i'd get heat but yeah my intentions were not as sinister as they appeared in my quick phone response.

For the record, I like high scores and like to see them be legit. That failed run of nibbler like 10 years ago was fun to watch and I follow a few speedrunners on twitch. I don't know why I am defending myself right now lol.

I digress. It was the sheer amount of time, work and effort put into proving these guys wrong that hit my funny bone...then like a brick. I had the same reaction with the multiple universes in Mario 64. Like, why. Seems like, oh whatever. It is definitely fun to read and watch about though. Makes good entertainment and sets things straight. Good for them!

Isn't it also possible that he could be playing on a hacked ROM? There's a lot of randomness to Donkey Kong, but if you're playing on MAME you could use a romhack that tilts things in your favor. For example iirc smashing a barrel is worth either 300, 500, or 800 points and how much you get is completely random, but with a modified ROM you could make 800 come up more often.

That is a possibility and I wouldn't be surprised if true. All we know now, though, is he was using mame, and my points are why those records were thrown out. The romhack thing would take a lot more investigation.
