Will Nintendo or Square ever tell us why Chrono Trigger didn't make the cut?

With the overwhelming wave of disappointment over Chrono Trigger being missing from the SNES Classic, will Nintendo or Square Enix have anything to say, or will they ignore it until it blows over?

I'm serious, folks. They just adamantly refuse to acknowledge that the game is very popular internationally. That's all this is. It's mystifying, yes, but it's their hill to die on.

Explanation is easy.

I don't think any other games were on the DS, but I could be wrong. I don't hyper-follow this stuff.

But the DS specifically? I know about FF6 and such on the GBA, but those were forever ago and with a lot of them they made stupid changes to the game that no one wanted.

If we're really comparing FF6 on GBA to CT on DS, then I'll note the FF6 release occurred in 2007 and the CT port was a year later in 2008. So there is really not much of a difference there at all. Furthermore, Chrono Trigger's port was criticized for a new translation (although I happen to think it's superior, personally) and largely bland, derivative new optional content, so it's not like that was a totally different situation either.

It really depends on your definition of popular. Outside of sites with a heavy RPG bias, Chrono Trigger is irrelevant. It wouldn't pass the mom test (if your mom knows what it is because she's "the ultimate casual", it's popular).

But on sites with an RPG bias, like us or IGN or whatever, Chrono Trigger always makes top 3 of any best game ever list.

FF7 would absolutely have passed the mom test in the late 90s. That game was EVERYWHERE.

FF6
Earthbound

at least CT has Toriyama art to raise the chances of confusing it for something else.

as for CT being on the DS:
FF6 has been, in just the past two years, on Android, iOS, and Steam. i wouldn't be surprised if the answer basically was "Nintendo only gave us so many slots" but really, just bump something else.

I have 2 possible reasons swirling around in my head.

1. It's stuck in some kind of legal limbo and an agreement couldn't be reached, or there's some kind of contract preventing it from happening, or whatever. Those fucking lawyers...I guess it could be because they released it on the DS not that long ago and it wouldn't be all that different, but still.

2. It's getting the 3DS treatment like Samus Returns and they want to blow people's minds after everyone is all like "where the FUCK is Chrono Trigger?!" after the SNES Classic announcement.

It's just such a glaring omission that, IMO, those are the only two explanations that make sense...God I hope it's the second one.

My hypothesis is that Square is only letting Nintendo put two of their games on the SNES Classic (plus Mario RPG). Nintendo picked Final Fantasy VI because you pretty much HAVE to have a Final Fantasy on there, and then picked Mana to push the multiplayer functionality.

I'd definitely put the blame on Square over Nintendo, since I'd imagine if it was up to Nintendo they'd rather have games like Chrono Trigger, ActRaiser, and Final Fantasy IV on there than stuff like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Kirby's Dream Course.

Again, though, Chrono Trigger DS was almost a decade ago. There's really no difference between a 2008 release for it and a 2007 GBA release for FF6. It has been a considerable amount of time for both by now. But they're also both on mobile, too, and Square tends to regard that as the ultimate destination for their legacy titles. So I guess it's neither here nor there, heh.

I strongly doubt the latter is correct. I just don't see Square bothering with the game in any meaningful way ever again. But I appreciate your optimism and it's a very nice dream. :P

The multiplayer functionality is definitely the reason Secret of Mana got in, yeah. Although... I think it's impossible to do three-player with this new hardware? That's a little bit of a shame, but hey, still pretty cool. I'd vastly prefer SD3, but...

I think Secret of Mana got in over CT due to nostalgia factor actually. Remember JRPGs weren't very popular in the west until FF7 since kids didn't really like static turn based combat back then, and most people probably played Chrono Trigger after FF7's breakthrough through discount bins, the PS1 re-release or the dreaded e-word.

Secret of Mana was pretty popular back in the day since it was basically Zelda with numbers and co-op and had a big push through Nintendo power, it also was released earlier while CT was a tail ender SNES release. It was also really popular in Europe from what I hear as well (though that's by default since CT didn't even get a PAL release.)

Chrono Trigger is an incredibly popular niche game.

It is strange that they picked Secret of Mana over it but I'm not surprised it's not on there.

On the flip side, I dunno if this is anything beyond being hopeful, but CT would be a great final reveal to announce shortly before the system releases.

Likely? Not counting on it. Just saying though, if they learned anything from the SSB Dojo...it could bring a nice final boost of excitement.

The only games I would have been shocked if they were omitted are Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid

Everything else that's on there plus like 10 other games are basically equal in a pool of potential additions that they could have chosen from.
