Also let's say you are a voter who wants single payer. Who do you vote for? Bernie. But he loses. Who do you vote for then? Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump? Your chances of getting single payer within the next 10 years are surely higher with a Trump win.

I want some of what you're smoking, because it is undoubtedly very good shit.

Universal coverage can still be the endgame. The big obstacle (according to the GOP) is Obamacare. So if you just get Obamacare repealed, you're like 60% of the way to affordable healthcare for all.

You don't... actually believe this is the case with Republican legislators do you?

Let's ignore the CBO scoring that has you go 22 million people in the wrong direction on coverage. We probably shouldn't, but for now I'll put it to the side.

Are you seriously suggesting that Republican voters are voting for Republican legislators with the intent that we achieve universal coverage/single payer? What exactly would make you think that way?

like you accuse people in this topic of erroneously thinking the voters are stupid but this is cognitive dissonance on a level that's almost stunning to me

Unless you're playing the super technical argument that "Well, it could be the goal! It may be entirely counter to it now but who knows what the future holds? Technically the probability is non-zero!" which would be entirely intellectually disingenuous here.

reminder that this is the same guy who said "the voters want all of trumps policies"

and when pressed he says he meant the electoral college voters.

He is never arguing in good faith.

I don't see it happening. Maybe. We will see.

A lot can happen in three-plus years, so there's no guarantee, but from the evidence available Trump not only intends to run for re-election, but began making overt plans for his re-election campaign remarkably early.

Edit: I don't think Trump enjoys being President. But I think he very much enjoyed running for President. I expect that's why he was so quick to register the re-election campaign: he's actually looking forward to it.

He didn't want to be President. But he wanted to win the election. So his obsession with winning the election overrode his desire to not be President.

And now here we are. And he wants to campaign and win an election all over again even though he absolutely hates the work.

Canada’s Ruthlessly Smart Immigration Policy

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/28/opinion/canada-immigration-policy-trump.html

Given the xenophobia now sweeping the rest of the West, Canadians’ openness might seem bizarrely magnanimous. In fact, it’s a reasonable attitude rooted in national interest. Canada’s foreign-born population is more educated than that of any other country on earth. Immigrants to Canada work harder, create more businesses and typically use fewer welfare dollars than do their native-born compatriots.

But Canada’s hospitable attitude is not innate; it is, rather, the product of very hardheaded government policies. Ever since the mid-1960s, the majority of immigrants to the country (about 65 percent in 2015) have been admitted on purely economic grounds, having been evaluated under a nine-point rubric that ignores their race, religion and ethnicity and instead looks at their age, education, job skills, language ability and other attributes that define their potential contribution to the national work force.

No wonder this approach appeals to President Trump. He’s right to complain that America’s system makes no sense. The majority (about two-thirds in 2015) of immigrants to the United States are admitted under a program known as family reunification — in other words, their fate depends on whether they already have relatives in the country. Family reunification sounds nice on an emotional level (who doesn’t want to unite families?). But it’s a lousy basis for government policy, since it lets dumb luck — that is, whether some relative of yours had the good fortune to get here before you — shape the immigrant population.

For example, about half of all Canadian immigrants arrive with a college degree, while the figure in the United States is just 27 percent. Immigrant children in Canadian schools read at the same level as the native born, while the gap is huge in the United States. Canadian immigrants are almost 20 percent more likely to own their own homes and 7 percent less likely to live in poverty than their American equivalents.

Canada's immigration policy is definitely not the one the US should aim for, and I hesitate to call it smart either (ruthless is an apt word though).

If we're concerned about eliminating "dumb luck" in immigration policy, people need to realize that whether you're an immigrant or native born is entirely dumb luck itself. From there, I'm not sure why family reunification is an inferior metric to education.

To be fair on a per capita basis we have the same rate of family reunification as the US.

It's just that our excess immigrants (per capita, relative to the US) must fulfill the requirements. It would be like if the US decided to increase immigration by 2 million people per year, but only "brought in the best."

My ideal immigration system is requires significantly decluttering the whole system of red tape while also ensuring that those who immediately need to move in are able to under a provincial license until their paperwork is finished, at which point they're either given their documentation or they're escorted back (but only if it's not a case of life or death for them)

That being said, I don't actually know enough about the system in order to say what needs to be decluttered, so I'm not actually informed enough to give a proper opinion.

I will say, though, that if an illegal immigrant has proven themselves to be a good citizen (as has been the case more than once), then their crime should be forgiven and they should be granted proper documentation.

Also, people and places that have been found paying anyone sub-minimum wage*, including illegal immigrants, should be steeply punished.

*exceptions including teenagers who, in many places, aren't required to be paid minimum wage anyways, which kinda puts the whole talking point of "minimum wage is for teenagers" out the window.

That was my opinion when I was consciously trolling this topic to make fun of all the twitter links. Twitter might legitimately be the best news source on the internet right now, because outside of press conferences and such, anyone with a phone can get people the news faster than the media can.

Edit: I feel like if CNN knows nothing will come of it, they shouldn't be giving it 3:1 coverage. There's a lot of legitimate issues with this presidency past a Russia narrative that can't be proven.
