W had many flaws.

He's probably the most GENUINE Presidsnt since maybe Coolidge. But unfortunately, both of them had numerous flaws. He wanted to do the absolute best for the country, his legacy be damned, but he was certainly in many respects ill equipped for what would come. Maybe he does better if he were dealt a different hand, we'all never know. I disagreed with an absolute ton Bush did.

Man what.

The Roosevelts (especially FDR) both consistently score very highly in bipartisan ratings of presidents; FDR is almost invariavly top three in particular. FDR was responsible for a lot of what made America arguably the world's greatest country post-WW2 (it certainly wasn't Coolidge or Hoover!); the only people who would class him as trash are extreme conservatives who believe that all government is evil.

Anyway I voted for Nixon, despite Watergate. Policy-wise he is one of the most obviously positive presidents in the group. Watergate is totally a valid reason not to vote for him, though. At which point... Ford and HW both fall into a group of "decent human being, generally neutral presidents" which I guess is the next best. Reagan was a principled leader who helped bring about the end of the Cold War but trickle-down economics is basically a big failure that continues to hurt America today (although to his credit he had the decency to realise a mistake and backpedaled on it somewhat, which I feel many of his disciples would never do). Oh and the War on Drugs.

Nixon.

Sure, he did a lot of terrible things OTHER than watergate. But there were also a number of good things he did--like Title IX and the EPA. Still not a good President, just better than the others. Which says more about the others than it does Nixon tbh.

The EPA was the reason I had him last. Not Watergate.

Title IX is pretty objectively awful too for college sports. But obviously there are bigger things at play there

You guys are clearly really young and don't remember how awful the Bush 1 presidency was. Or how beloved Reagan was, even by most people on the left. He was so liked that even legitimate issues would bounce off the guy because no one really wanted to attack him.

Nixon probably wins without Watergate. The election where he won every state but one is really funny to read about.

I'll admit I wasn't around for neither Reagan nor HW, and I understand how beloved Reagan was -- hell, look at the cult he still commands. There's even the phrase "Reagan Democrat." But without having rose-tinted lenses, the dude was a hypocrite on many levels. He was head of a union before he gutted unions. He raised taxes after he lowered them and realized how much he'd fucked up. He bloated our military and wracked up huge debt in doing so, only to try to blame it on social programs. He didn't "win the Cold War" as much as the USSR lost it on its own because lolcommunism.

Reagan and Eisenhower are the best two Republican Presidents in the modern sense of Republicanism. HW is third.

Nixon is underrated. He was actually a pretty good President until he tried to cover up what his buddies tried to pull. Like with Clinton being convicted of perjury, that's a big stain on his record despite having major upsides otherwise.

Trump doesn't count, by the way. He's only been in office five months. We have no idea what his impact will be yet.

We already know his impact on how the rest of the world perceives the US. In five months he's made the position of US President into a worldwide laughing stock AND made us the only country aside from fucking Syria to not go along with the Paris Agreement AND spent the majority of the time as president being investigated by the FBI.

It's like if Nixon had just started with Watergate right off the bat, and then just gone from there

Reagan was directly responsible for preventing research into AIDS, and he shut down mental hospitals all across America.

On top of the complete garbage that is trickle down economics, this is why he's easily the worst Republican President.

He may have been charismatic at the time, but an objective view of his actions and the results that we can see today show that being beloved is not the same thing as being good.

He has a cult following that believes he was the best thing to happen to America.

And at this point, I'm starting to think this "cult" is literal, not an analogy.

Even with factual proof of the harm he's caused to America and Americans, people still worship him like he was the second coming of Jesus.

"Coincidentally", this is the same cult that worships Trump now.
