A few of these are pretty legit concerns that showcase that no one country's people are all completely likeminded in their tastes. I really laugh at number ten.

A few of these are kind of ridiculous, too, but that happens with most polls!

Or my good friend BizarroFatJeff for that matter. He always, always mentions crunchyroll during in-depth discussions over coffee at Denny's.

RPG developers could stand to listen to these people.

Tangentially related to number one: the characters are almost always in their teens or early twenties, with everyone older than thirty being called "old." I get that developers want to market these games to Japanese teenagers, since that's where the money is, but are you telling me that the youth of Japan would like a game less if its main cast were over the age of twenty-seven?

1. The characters are all good-looking guys and beautiful girls.
Good. That means soon we won't be forced to be stereotypical bishounen every game.

2. Movie --> Dialogue --> Movie
Yeah, I miss the days where characters could interact with each other without it being a cutscene.

3. Opening chests without permission
Not sure what this means. Like, going into houses and taking stuff?

4. You have a bunch of characters, but only a few of them can participate in the battle.
Yeah, this is lame.

5. The actual game contents are subordinated to the theme song, voice actress, etc.
I've noticed this as a trend in JRPGs too, where they care more about advertising those things rather than the game itself

6. About 1,200 people line up for preorders.
I imagine this is targetted mostly at Dragon Quest >_>

7. Hidden things you wouldn't understand unless you read a walkthrough
Yeeup.

8. The protagonist always does the opposite of what I think.
Yeah.

9. You're just running errands, and then before you know it you have somehow saved the world.
Hmm... Usually there is escalation at least.

10. They're called JRPGs.
lol

So basically, this signifies another problem in the JRPG industry. Not only are companies like SE out of touch with what westerners want in an RPG, but they're out of touch with their domestic base as well.

If you want the character to do what you think, go play a wRPG. Do people not get that jRPG's tell a story while in a wRPG you make one yourself?

1 goes for most genres and even for things outside of gaming. People like characters that look cool or attractive and that doesn't really hit them with ugly characters.

not necessarily. just because something is one of the top 10 complaints does not mean that most people feel that way about it. just that it is one of the top 10 complaints.

8. The protagonist always does the opposite of what I think.

Does this mean the protagonist acts the opposite of the way they would act? Or that they can't tell what the protagonist is going to do next?

because if it's the latter

damn.

It means 'the dude that is supposed to be my avatar in the world is an idiotic douche and I wouldn't do things like he did. I'm smarter than this, game, goddammit!'. It means the writing is bad and the way the protagonist acts isn't consistent and logical.

Stories tend to be less enjoyable if their characters aren't relatable.

I don't think protagonists always need to do the smart or logical thing. What if that thing doesn't fit their personality?

You're confusing logical with rational. Rational is doing the thing that maximizes your profits or benefits, AKA 'the smart thing'. Logical means doing what is consistent and follows from predefined stipulations...AKA what follows from your personality. Illogical characters who aren't made to be crazy are impossible to relate to, because all of us are mostly tremendously logical in our own ways.

I'm okay with the protag acting in a way I wouldn't if the protag is well defined as a character and consistent, and stuff that "could go either way" isn't patently opposite of what I want him to do.

Like Lloyd Irving being naive and stupid is cool with me because he's got strong characterization throughout the game.
But a guy like Crono who's all but a blank slate, or even a guy with more but still not that much like Bartz from FFV? Yeah it's annoying. And of course if a character does something that I not only dislike but also comes off as totally inconsistent like Squall from FFVIII that's even worse.
