From: SmartMuffin | #448 That must have been one HELL of a crossbody that Punk and Bryan were going for, because after hitting each other with them, they both stayed down for like three ****ing minutes while AJ set up her table and climbed the turnbuckle. Yeah, I said this. They should have both been counted out really
Also I seem to like Raws that have a strong focus on one person throughout. I remember the Raw about 2 weeks before TLC where a huge part of it was about Ryder getting his US title shot, and "Oh Radio" played about 4 times (he faced Cena, lost, got a second match with Henry, won, then interfered in Ziggler's match with Sheamus and beat up on him). A lot of tonight was "the AJ show" and it kept me very interested - while still having enough other stuff going on for her to not get too much.
How successful do you think an HBO type of wrestling program would be? It would be heavily story driven, but all in ring action would in theory be great due to the fact they could script every portion. (Also there could be some diva on diva action but thats beside the point)
I think if they had some solid wrestling stars and really skilled workers scripting the matches it would be amazing

From: Lopen | #447 Like where are they actually trying to go with this?
They're trying to set up doubt and confusion about what she'll do as Special Guest Ref.
From: SmartMuffin | #450 Do you think you've watched more episodes than Michael Cole? Than JR? Than Vince McMahon?
I sure as hell remember more episodes than Vince!
But no, I have not seen more episodes than Vince. Let's be on the conservative side and say I've seen 900 of them. Vince has been at every Raw aside from a 2-month span in 1994 where he was busy with the steroid trials, and an extremely sparse handful here and there otherwise.
I'm sure I've seen more than Cole since he was hired in 1996, and I doubt he was a huge fan beforehand. That's over 150 episodes missed right there even if he's seen every episode since he was hired (and with a huge chunk of his career spent on SD, that's no given).
JR is a tough one. Raw had been on the air for 3 months before he was poached from WCW and brought over to WWE, but I dunno if I can count those 3 months as misses. He seems like the type that would keep up. But then you have all the Raws he missed due to Belll's Palsy, and then all the Raws since he got kayfabe fired (minus the handful he was still on). I'm going to surmise that JR has seen more Raws than I have.
One out of three ain't bad.

I mean on the grand scheme of things. Is the entire payout of this storyline "AJ is a special guest ref with a random element to add to the match?"
Like what are they building to? It's like the various Johnny Ace storylines where it seemed to be about building him up more than about the other guys. The net result of this seems to make AJ relevant, but that's not a great thing to use your main event scene on for two months unless she's going to take a major role as a main event manager soon, which would actually be pretty cool to be fair. But I have my doubts that's the point!

It is what it says it is (or rather it WILL BE whenever it finally gets released)
"WRP is a 13-episode seasonal concept built on wrestling storytelling with a complete three act narrative structure. Cutting the cord completely from the modern wrestling industry chronology, it's the launch of a new universe with new characters and new rules. WRP aims to combine modern, relevant themes with compelling in-ring storytelling to create a unique wrestling television experience."
It's kinda what you want, in that it's a Cable Network-style take on wrestling built over a TV season with everything intricately scripted to guide this cast of characters through their story arcs.

Oh well then when its released if you could give me a headsup.
My mental image is more like a gritty version of Randy Orton in the back threatining some dude he doesnt like and then by the end of the episode they duke it out.

From: ScareChan | #464 But I am pretty sure that there would have to be at least one Candace Michelle sexes up Trish Stratus scene per episode or equivalant >_> This sounds like Babes of Sin City with a budget.
Crap, I missed an opportunity to make another NWWL joke. Gotta remember to keep hyping that up.

The main thing that has me skeptical of that is whether they're going to make it feel like a wrestling show, or make it feel like a show about wrestling. I don't even mean that I think they're going to like, have "shoots" and stuff and treat the business like a business with excess backstage crap. I just mean that even if it takes the approach that the show itself is "real" is it going to feel like a wrestling show? Even beyond the basic crowd stuff, is the format going to be closer to a wrestling show or a drama with wrestling matches thrown in.
Like an an example:
Wrestling show starts with guys having a dispute backstage, authority figure making match (or the match being booked/hyped beforehand if you don't want an authority), that's the main event, then the guys take shots at each other over the course of the show, and the match happens. Drama show with wrestling starts with guys having having a dispute backstage, constantly taking shots at each other over the course of the show, and then they build the rivalry, and then towards the end of the show after some pushing from their friends they head to the ring to resolve this LIKE MEN and the match finishes up the episode.
Like one feels like a story with wrestling as the way for resolution, whereas the other one legit is structured like a wrestling show. I'm sure there are better ways to describe this and the second example could theoretically happen on a wrestling show but uh... I think you guys know what I mean?
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Well in my vision I imagine the key visual difference is just higher production quality. Matches would take place in front of real crowds, but it would be more like pieces from the same two guys having the same match like 3 or 4 different times to get the cleanest one. like if they filmed every house show and made the perfect match.

Here's some supplemental material for the WRP universe ("universe" in the comic book sense of the term, not WWE Universe <_<) they've just started releasing. Doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the actual WRP show directly, and it's a completely different tone style-wise, but it's fleshing out the world a bit.
"The Underground" Episode 1
"The Underground" Episode 2
Who knew Nick Jackson was a better actor than Matt Jackson? I can't say I would have called that.

Yeah, they've said that if they were to do a season two it would definitely be set in the same universe but would probably feature a completely different cast of characters.

Editing matches and crowd reactions goes a long way towards killing my interest in wrestling (it's a big part of the reason I just can't care about SmackDown a lot of the time). The one thing that interests me about that WRP is the idea that they can tell a story with a clearly defined beginning, middle, and end, and not have to worry about maintaining the universe beyond that.
Also I'm curious what they will/would do when/if someone gets injured.

I don't suppose anyone here has the chat log from the Raw last year where Punk gave his shoot promo, do they? Or any of the logs from the PPV/go-home Raw?

I do, yeah.
My b8watchesraw chat log got so big it took me about 15 minutes to open it, so I copy-pasted them into 4 or 5 separate wordpad files and deleted it. But I have everything since like May of last year, bar a few weeks where I didn't use my own laptop and used meebo instead.

Totally with you on this. As much as I loved the AJ thing at first, it seems to be going nowhere and getting WAY too many resources devoted to it with no real end goal in sight.
Also, I'm getting a little sick of YES! as well. *ducks*

Honestly, AJ is the only thing I pay attention to when it comes to Raw, so if they're determined to make the show slowly 3 hours of AJ they might success in getting me to watch again.
I am now accepting donations to the "Care about X's segments so he/she'll get more screen time" Fund.

He's just here to be jobber to the stars and make funny faces. And get in catchphrase-offs with DBD.
Which admittedly is a pretty good deal. He can be number 3.

I had a crazy idea watching last night that one of these times, Doink should come out for his usual jobbin', but then it turns out it's Matt Bourne under there and he starts kicking everyone's ass. It would play right into his Evil Doink character

The WWE? Running something into the ground? Surely you jest!
The final segment last night actually featured them running two decent ideas into the ground simultaneously. That's talent!
For my money, The ONLY thing last night worth seeing was the Heath Slater segment and maybe the opening segment. That was okay too.

- As was reported yesterday, WWE tried to get Bruno Sammartino to agree to be inducted into next year's WWE Hall of Fame as a headliner, only to have Sammartino's people issue a statement denying it once news broke.
According to reports, Triple H actually called Sammartino to convince him to accept the offer. Sammartino has serious and long-standing issues with Vince McMahon so Triple H contacted him and told him not to worry about Vince, and to think about his legacy and educating today's audience about his career instead. Bruno was said to be "not impressed."
