can have multiple: knight (swords and greatswords are great), monk (huge hp)
absolutely have at least one: white mage (two isn't a bad idea), time mage
have two or three characters with one of these for antiair: uhlan, monk, machinist, archer
meh but one's ok: foebreaker, archer, uhlan

Characters have very slightly different license boards for the same jobs and some have access to more stuff with certain summons/quickenings. Like I remember my bushi/monk vaan somehow gained access to curaja on one of those trees via summons. Summons can seriously open up some windows, but you can only assign each summon to one character.

Also, job combinations can give access to more stuff. Like some boards will have, for example, heavy armor 5-10 in a bunch of nodes not connected to the rest of the license board. If you get any of heavy armor 5 through 10 on one board, it automatically fills out that section on the other board- allowing you to get all of heavy armor 5 through 10 as they're connected.

That said you don't have to preplan that much imo. Just keep this stuff in mind and go for opportunities as they appear. Spreading out job choices is a very good idea because chances are you'll run across rare drops of different weapon types. It'd suck to get a really good ninja sword and not be able to use it, right? I basically rotated my characters based on who got lucky weapon drops.
