Having the Note didn't change him, it just revealed who he always was, right from the start. He was only the straight-A student who seemed like a good person because that's what society expected him to be, and the socially acceptable mask he wore because he wasn't willing to risk breaking the rules. He wasn't a noble, good person who was slowly turned evil.
