i have taken classes for this stuff. i quit when financial aid would no longer cover me taking courses that weren't going towards my degree. seriously, i dream about going to grad school - but i'm not interested in finishing an undergraduate degree so that won't happen.

i took all the electives i could at my last university (including one cross-listed grad course that i took in my first semester and got into without any of the prerequisites lol) and in the summer i was lucky enough to be able to take a handful of 1- or 2-week intensive field courses in biology. i was sometimes able to tag along on field trips for courses i wasn't in, i became a sort of honorary grad student in the small college, ha - and then professors who had known me to be an awesome student in the field were disappointed at having to fail me for not completing assignments.

school's dumb. i'm gonna do hobby science.

I hear ya man. It's a money machine.
Luckily there are books, and now the internet to help.

Hell fucking ya dude.

That is exactly where I'm at. I figured that out a long time ago. ((I think I'm a bit older.))
It's the same with music. I play the piano but have no real interest in joining a band and all that.

But even closer to the point, and regarding me talking your ear off about geology...That is reallly my mindset. There were many times I was parked somewhere odd, next to a road cut, or some lookout, or hiking spot, that was questionable, okay...I always was ready to tell any cop that I was an amateur geologist with the knowledge I could explain how. Even if was just, really chillin' by a waterfall.

Some people say, make your hobby your job and you never work a day.
But sometimes, keeping your hobbies yours is a wise desition.

I know geology, but I don't want to tap oil wells or look for suitable places for unsuitable buildings.

I'd rather play the piano when the moment hits me.
And look over a landform and actually see Millions, if not Billions of years of history. :-)
