And yes, I'm half-assuming that his Ekans rant is a criticism of people whining about non-inclusions.

Yes, the entire rant is 112% sarcastic. He doesn't give a shit, and is mocking a very specific sort of person for obsessing over it.

Even when I agree with Sterling, I still dislike him, find him obnoxious, and chronically unfunny.

I like his smarmy asshole persona. He's basically playing a wrestling heel (which is why it wasn't entirely surprising when he actually got into local wrestling as a manager). He lathers the sarcasm and venom over what is surprisingly good journalism for the same reason Mike Stoklasa did his movie reviews as Mr. Plinkett - because listening to someone talk about sterile facts in a clinical tone is dull as fuck, and most people watching videos on YouTube would get bored and nope out pretty quickly. He's not that different from Yahtzee (though Yahtzee's mainly a reviewer), which is part of why I gravitated to Jim in the first place when they were both on the Escapist.

I usually only get a bit irritated with Jim when he gets a bit too into social politics, or goes off on one of his "capitalism is bad!" rants (which tend to overgeneralize and which are a bit repetitive at this point), but I enjoy a lot of his work even if I actually disagree with a lot of his opinions about good games (the same problem I have with Yahtzee, honestly).
