It takes a while for all the pieces of the battle system to come together, and it isn't explained as well as it could be (the first Xenoblade let you replay tutorials at any time, so I'm not sure why 2 doesn't), but I enjoyed it well enough once it got there and I figured out what I was doing.
This. Once is clicks, the battle system becomes really fun. Albeit, a lot of it is tedious and needlessly complicated.

Plus, I loved hearing the announcer shout "Awesome!" and whatnot.

Unrelated, but I forgot how fucking awful the sound mixing in this game is. You can barely hear some of these characters over the OST in cutscenes. And I wish it were an isolated incident, but it happens over and over again.
Yeah, this was a major gripe I had. In battle is just a clusterfuck of people talking to each other, shouting commands/battle moves, SFX, and the music.

When you get into battles against multiple enemies that each have blades, it sounds like a fucking debug sound mode. I'm not sure why they thought that was a good idea.
