4. Phantasy Star Online - A Longing to Ancient Times (Part 2)
Composed by Hideaki Kobayashi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E9yEBNhUV4" data-time="

someone speedran phantasy star II (i think) at ESA and he had to do some button combination that took like 35 minutes (well, less than that; he made a mistake about 10 minutes into the combination and had to reset) and everyone in the audience started dancing to the music in the game in the background. one of the most bizarre things i've seen at a marathon event but it was really funny.

anyway, this is great! this is also pretty fusion-ish but not really in that mid-'90s way, which is more like a pastiche of yellowjackets and koinonia and the rippingtons and all those other fusion bands i love. this is more like that type of music mixed with orchestral music, and also more experimental and out there than those bands. however, it's not so ultra out there that i can't get into it. i'm not like "oh wow this sounds like if stockhausen made fusion music." (stockhausen i never got into even though he was a huge influence on zappa - sorry mycro.) but yeah, i like this song even better than the phantasy star II soundtrack (which i thought was very good as well). more music from this franchise should be in VGMC!

5. Mushihimesama Futari - Setting Off Together ~ Stage One
Composed by Manabu Namiki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qoyJbieTOc" data-time="

this sounds kinda like 2000s trance which is a type of music i never got into for the most part (some of it is great, though). i do love the instrumentation, however. it's much better than "typical trance." and some of the melodies are fantastic and manage to put this tune into the "great" tier! (no i'm not going to look up where in the song they appear. sorry guys i'm writing this stuff on autopilot. if you want good writeups on VGM go to mycro's topic.)

6. Trails in the Sky SC - Aiming For the Future
Composed by Wataru Ishibashi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=360l1Jg5Kko" data-time="

oh trails in the sky SC. i think this is a soundtrack mycro really likes but i never really saw what the big deal was (though i do remember liking the songs i've heard).

the first half of this tune is great. again, it sounds fusion-ish but it seems to be inspired by some micro(mycro?)genre of fusion that i can't entirely put my finger on. it's more "out there" than those bands i named earlier but it's not quite as intricate as return to forever of tribal tech or planet x either. this is more like... steps/steps ahead, i guess. or vital information. yeah, i guess those bands are pretty decent reference points. "somewhat 'out there' fusion bands that started in the '80s," is what i'm going to call this genre.

BUT the second half i can't say i like. i don't even know how to describe what it sounds like - cheesy synth music that plays on a CD-ROM when it explains how to install something? *thinking emoji*

on the basis of the first half alone i will still put this song in the "great" tier, though! all that being said, this is definitely better than the trails in the sky SC songs i remember mycro talking about. dang it, mycro, why didn't you ever bring up this one?!? (you probably did and i just forgot or didn't listen to it.)
