I half expected a reference to Saints Row IV, where you become President and are told you can only push one initiative through Congress, and thus have to choose between "End World Hunger" or "Fuck Cancer".

I personally feel like it's easier to drop a major hobby than it is to adopt one you aren't interested in

Depends on how addicted you are. For some gamers, it would theoretically be easier for them to cut off a foot than it would be for them to stop gaming even for a month.

But the real problem is how you define the term "gamer". Generally speaking, it applies to far more than just "someone who plays games". It's generally a term that refers to people who build their entire self-image around playing games and gaming culture. It's more a state of mind and a subculture complete with its own jargon, memes, and shared history.

Arguably, most people posting on these boards would fall into the gamer sphere even if they haven't played a single game in years. Because gaming has shaped a significant portion of all of our lives (up to and including leading us to post socially on a video game message board), we mostly socialize with other people of the same mindset, and so on.
