Puzzle: CrossCode

I enjoyed the hell out of this and I'm not entirely sure how to categorize it. Puzzle RPG Platformer? The story was pretty sweet, if sometimes predictable, and some of the puzzles were waaaaay hard. But it always felt good to progress.

Still waiting for that post-game DLC!

50. Beat three games in a series (First game)

Dragon Quest II (Mobile)

What It Is: An incredible test of patience and perseverance in an age before GameFAQs, updated to be much easier to stumble upon the crazy things in the middle of nowhere.

- While playing and looking forward towards likely adding a few more Dragon Quest games to this list, I looked up a ranking of Dragon Quest games as well as their recommended platforms. I learned how this was probably the hardest and most frustrating of the early games, and I can definitely understand why. I gave myself the task of not consulting a guide once... after using a guide in the beginning of the game to find out where the hell the Prince was after running back and forth for an hour or two (had to talk to the king). But, after about four or five days playing at work, I pushed my way forward little by little: going back to every town to talk to NPCs noting everything I don't think I'd done or said yet (...I still don't think I ever found the Echo Flute); drawing pen and paper layouts of confusing stair dungeons, of which there were many; forgetting I had to use items constantly and skipping places for hours.

It was actually quite fun for the situation I was playing (i.e. to pass the long quiet downtime at work waiting for phone calls), but I think I would have quit out if: a. I was playing at my leisure at home, and b. it was the NES version. There were some nice anti-frustration features added to this game like glowy spots on the ground where key items were and a roadblock to the final area if you didn't have all the items you needed. I played on mute though so I didn't hear any of the soundtrack.
