"Alex Garland is EASILY the most promising upcoming director out right now, and I can't wait to see what he does next. Between this and Annihilation, there are few sci-fi directors who can even come close to his level of both creativity and execution. Ex Machina is on a pleasantly small scale, allowing it to cover just what is necessary for a successful AI movie with no excess. By limiting it to just 4 characters the film can really dive deep into the four go-to character tropes of the subgenre: the AI, the prototype, the creator and the outsider. We know just the bare minimum we need to about each of them, allowing us to see them each come into their own without prior bias. That's just touching the surface of what makes Ex Machina incredible. Toss in incredible performances, cinematography, writing and visual effects. The film is sleek and smart and everything I wanted from it." ~Johnbobb

"A young man goes to a secluded lab owned by a reclusive billionaire who has perfected AI in the form of a beautiful female robot. The film is an entrancing ride as the kid has conversations with Eva as sort of a Turing Test, and eventually falls in love with her.
There is great interaction between both male leads, and never gets old seeing them bounce dialogue off each other. The situation gets more and more horrifying as the realization slowly dawns on both the protagonist and the audience that Nathan is a egomaniacal lunatic who is building his own little kingdom of robot sex toys.
It is a stellar movie that really makes you think about the ethics (and dangers) of creating artificial intelligence." ~Karo

"There have been a lot of exciting directorial debuts in the film industry over the last 5-10 years, but perhaps none have been so promising as Alex Garland's incredible Ex Machina. It's a deep, beautiful, and truly eerie film with brilliant performances from its entire cast. Much like most of my top ten, this is a master work of tone, in which lots of different themes are explored without the movie ever feeling like it's trying to take on too much at once. The Oscar-winning effects are seamless to the modern eye, and the script is obviously the product of a lot of meticulous thought and care. Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson have great chemistry, and Oscar Isaac's weird, unhinged billionaire here is a far cry from Poe Dameron. I consider this a must-watch for any fan of the genre, and a modern classic that will hopefully stand the test of time." ~KBM

"MIND GAMES the movie. I really like how diverse the cast is when it comes to their ideals and intentions and how they bounce off each other. The isolated environment also works well with showing off the desperation of some characters. The movie also did a good job of showing the uncanny valley when it came to the robots. I did like the movies sense of moral ambiguity with your feelings on characters being based on how you treat the robots, although I think they could have done a better job with Nathan, as entertaining as he is. That dance scene was great." ~JONA [Editor's Note: I lolled at the beginning]
