It's actually from a musical stage play. The first movie was The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays in 1908 made and funded by Baum himself. It was a 2 hour film (rather long for the time) that was hand colored. It also involved actual live actors during showings of the film and a live orchestra for music. It was a rather expensive production.

It was not a very smart financial move since even though the shows always sold out it still lost money.
