It's a horrible law, but it's applied unevenly to those who are poor or less powerful, so there's never a public outrage to change it. That reminds me of a case from Texas where a person shot a convenience store owner and got life in prison while the accomplice got the death penalty. Fucking ridiculous. Far-Queue posted... Makes me think of that awful case where the cop made a dude lay face down and crawl toward him in a hotel hallway, all while sobbing and begging for his life, and the cop still shot him, and then got away with it! This fucking country has way too much protection for cops. It's absurd.
